Incorporating air quality health impacts into the social cost of carbon
Disproportionate Clean Air Act violations occur in communities of color throughout the United States
The United States (U.S.) Clean Air Act seeks to prevent and abate ambient air pollution, while also providing a framework to identify and address violations. Little research has examined where or how frequently violations of the Clean Air Act occur and how marginalized communities may bear a disproportionate share of these violations, despite the fact that marginalized communities experience persistent, disproportionate pollution levels and assoc…

PM 2.5 data inputs alter identification of disadvantaged communities
Communities of color and lower income are often found to experience disproportionate levels of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) air pollution in the US (Pope and Dockery 2006 J. Air Waste Manage. Assoc. 56 709–42; Brook et al 2010 Circulation 121 2331–78; Tessum et al 2021 Sci. Adv . 7 eabf4491). The federal and several state governments use relatively coarsely resolved (12 km) PM 2.5 concentration estimates to identify overburdened communities.…
Diesel passenger vehicle shares influenced Covid-19 changes in urban nitrogen dioxide pollution
Diesel-powered vehicles emit several times more nitrogen oxides than comparable gasoline-powered vehicles, leading to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) pollution and adverse health impacts. The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing changes in emissions provide a natural experiment to test whether NO 2 reductions have been starker in regions of Europe with larger diesel passenger vehicle shares. Here we use a semi-empirical approach that combines in-situ N…
Connections between summer air pollution and stagnation
The body of literature on ambient air pollution suggests that atmospheric stagnation events trigger high levels of air pollution. In this paper we use fifteen years (2000–2014) of summertime in situ air quality measurements together with meteorological reanalysis data to examine the temporal correlation of pollutants with the Air Stagnation Index (ASI) on daily timescales. We find that while the direction of the relationship between the ASI and s…
