  • The “Great Vilnius Controversy” in Data

    Open Access•Michał E Nowakowski, Cezary Rosiński•ARTICLE•Journal of Jesuit Studies•2026

This article presents the first systematic reconstruction and quantitative exploration of the confessional polemics produced in Vilnius, Lithuania, between 1574 and 1647 by Catholic (primarily Jesuit), Reformed, and Unitarian authors. Earlier studies have tended to isolate prominent polemicists or individual exchanges, whereas we seek to treat the surviving texts as a single interconnected corpus. At the project’s core is a database of 156 works—…

  • Reassessing Loyalties

    Michał E Nowakowski•ARTICLE•Sixteenth Century Journal•2025

This paper challenges the dominant narrative about the Jesuits’ political stance in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, particularly regarding the Zebrzydowski Rokosz (1606–7), a major noble rebellion against the Polish king. By juxtaposing the political views of Piotr Skarga, a prominent Jesuit royal preacher, expressed in 1597, with those of a relatively obscure Jesuit Jan Chądzyński from the mid-seventeenth century, I question the prevailing b…

In the current climate, where funding for the humanities is increasingly scarce, and the stewardship of the Society of Jesus's heritage faces constraints due to reduced personnel, emerging scholars in the field of Jesuit history confront notable challenges in conducting personal international research.1Moreover, such undertakings may appear redundant given the expansive digitization of library and archival collections.Yet, these firsthand scholar…

The number of Polish scholarly translations of the primary sources from late medieval and early modern Europe is still unsatisfactory, despite continuous efforts in this area.Polish scholarship is yet to receive, for instance, editions of multiple fundamental writings of late medieval spirituality of the devotio moderna movement. The situation is no different with regard to the founding texts of the Society of Jesus. Thus, we should welcome the lat…

  • Poradnik dyplomatyczny Tadeusza Morskiego na tle europejskich poprzedników

    Open Access•Michał E Nowakowski•ARTICLE•Roczniki Humanistyczne•2023

  • How to Survive in the Renaissance Tatar Crimea

    Michał E Nowakowski•ARTICLE•Viator•2022

This paper examines Ławryn Piaseczyński’s diplomatic manual and its origins in the context of the author’s three consecutive diplomatic missions to Crimea on behalf of the Polish king, revealing the issues of diplomatic contacts with non-European cultures and the practice of gift-giving in late Renaissance diplomacy. I demonstrate how this hitherto unexplored text stands out from other Renaissance treatises and manuals on diplomacy and how Piasec…
