A Victorian Abortionist on Trial
Ransom J. Andrews, a career abortionist in Toronto, stood trial for procuring an abortion in 1885 and nine years later was tried for murder because the Crown alleged he had caused the death of a young woman by performing an abortion on her. The two cases provide a window on the usually hidden social history of abortion in Victorian Canada. Toronto newspapers sensationalized the cases, shaping narratives and interesting readers by depicting the ca…
Rough Work
Motley Crowds and Splendid Assemblies
This article explores how local newspapers depicted the election culture of parliamentary campaigns in mid-Victorian Toronto. Here "election culture" refers to the practices, performances, and often ritualized behaviour of people in the public sphere who attended meetings and gathered in streets during and immediately after election campaigns. The city's highly partisan newspapers glowingly represented favoured candidates' campaigns while denigra…

Collective Rights, Liberal Discourse, and Public Order
Two occasions when Protestants attacked Roman Catholic religious processions in Victorian Toronto – the 1864 Corpus Christi celebrations and the Jubilee Riots of 1875 – provide opportunities for deepening understandings of liberal discourse in relationship to public order in Canada. The intensity of the religious disputes grew from differences in religious belief and ethnicity and from established patterns of public behaviour. Catholic procession…
Celebrating the Suppression of the North-West Resistance of 1885
Political Demonstrations and Spectacles during the Rebellion Losses Controversy in Upper Canada
In response to the rebellion losses bill controversy of 1849, Upper Canadians mounted a series of political demonstrations and spectacles. Opponents of the bill (and of the governor who gave it royal assent) took to the streets in displays of ‘muscular conservatism' where sheer numbers and undertones of violence associated with effigy burnings and rioting gave weight to their opposition. In response, Reform government supporters joined the fray, …
Performance, Politics, and Representation
The 1860 tour of Canada made by the Prince of Wales not only provided an occasion for state officials and other non-Aboriginal people to appropriate and display Indians but it was also an opportunity for Native people themselves to claim public attention, affirm their own loyalism and cultural integrity, and demand redress of political grievances. For Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people alike, Native participation in the public performances prov…
Immigration and Labour
No persuasive account of labour in Australia and Canada can ignore the impact that immigration has wrought on the composition of the working class and preoccupations of workers, unions, and the varied political parties they have sponsored. Highlighting both similarities and differences between countries, the paper explores the paradoxical relationship that immigration has had with the labour movements of Australia and Canada. Although immigrants …

The Character and Circumstance of Canada's Industrialization
IN THE 1960S ROBOTICS appeared to hold such promise for industrialists that observers began predicting the complete replacement of blue-collar workers by a steel-collar labour force before trie end of the century. Yet the late 1980s find such predictions to have proven rather unrealistic for reasons quite unanticipated twenty years ago. Most surprising to industrialists, perhaps, has been the discovery that replacing humans by robots is often muc…

A Link between Labour and Learning
This paper traces the rise and fall in Ontario of the Workers Educational Association (WEA), a voluntary association whose main purpose was to organize inexpensive, non-credit night classes taught by university professors for the working class. The Association was an offshoot of the British WEA. ln Ontario the main impetus for establishing an Association in 1918 came from members of Toronto's intellectual elite. One of their aims was to teach lab…
