Missionary Work in Wonsan
In the Cartography Department of the National and University Library (NUK) in Ljubljana, there is a single picture postcard showing a black and white photo of the Benedictine abbey in Tokwon near Wonsan, today’s North Korea. The postcard was printed in Slovenia, or by a Slovenian printing house, because the caption is in Slovene. This picture postcard was not mailed, and there is no additional information regarding who possessed the card and when…
Trivial Objects from Taishō Japan in the Collection of Alma M. Karlin
Alma M. Karlin, a young woman adventurer who made her journey around the world between 1919 and 1927, stayed in Japan for a little more than a year. As a young woman without significant funds, she relied on her own ability to earn a living during her stay in the country. Among the items she brought back from Japan to Slovenia there are many small objects which are not typical “exotic objects from the Far East”. They are rather small and trivial i…
Zbirke starih japonskih razglednic v Republiki Sloveniji

The association recognizes the need to share the concepts and achievements of the CEFR.The Japan Foun…

In the last decade, much effort has been dedicated to Korea-related activities by this Department and, thanks to the fruitful cooperation with many important Korean academic and cultural institutions, the Department h…
Creative competence in borrowings
Japanese has no category of gender or number. Nouns as well as adjectives have no inflection. The phonological construction of words is syllabic and there is no stress accent but pitch accent. Five vowels have short and long opposition. On the other hand, Slovene has categories of number and gender. Nouns are inflected according to six cases. Phonologically, all nouns carry a stress accent. In this paper, the gender and number assignment to loanw…
Causative constructions in Japanese and Slovene
Whereas Japanese has a productive causative morpheme -( s)ase- that is added to a non-causative verb to derive a causative verb, Slovene has no such single morpheme that may be considered to directly correspond with the Japanese morpheme. This arti cle considers causative constructions first from a typological perspective, and then in present-day Japanese and Slovene by examining a small corpus of literary texts. The use of the Japanese causativ…
