A Portrait of the Animal as a Young Artist
This essay situates James Joyce within the competing discourses of Catholic theology, evolutionary biology, and Nietzsche’s philosophy, with emphasis on their attitudes towards the body and the animal-human boundary. Joyce’s use of “instinct” in his early works (Dubliners, Stephen Hero, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) helps us understand his movement from a view of animals and the human body as frightening or paralyzing to a more ope…

Writing Music into Australian History
General historians have tended to overlook music when seeking to accommodate the arts in their narratives. Looking at the genre of the short history over the last century this article explores the faltering attempts to rectify this omission and argues that the decline of the radical nationalist tradition in Australian historiography may assist music in finding its proper place in the writing of Australian history

A Family Romance
A Family Romance is the story of the family of Alfred Deakin, Australia's first elected Prime Minister. In this intriguing book, John Rickard explores the complex web of relationships between Alfred, his wife Pattie, and his sister Catherine. The Deakin 'family romance' is permeated by the influence of spiritualism which, in extraordinary circumstances, brought Alfred and Pattie together, and which was to haunt their marriage. It is a tale which,…
