    Open Access•Marta Serrano Coll•ARTICLE•Eikon / Imago•2025•References: 4

This study offers an analysis of the most relevant aspects concerning the physical presence of Peter the Ceremonious, who, with his complex personality, was very conscious of the pre-eminence of his rank and dignity. To carry out this study, textual sources (mainly his chronicle and the Ordinacions of his house and court) has been resorted. But also, the iconographic representations of his person which, as will be seen, are very eloquent of the k…

  • James II and his Artistic Patronage in Santes Creus

    Open Access•Marta Serrano Coll•ARTICLE•Imago temporis medium Aevum•2022

This study analyses two of the great artistic projects that James II the Just (1291-1327) promoted at the Cistercian monastery of Santes Creus (Aiguamúrcia, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain) and which still stand to this day; namely, the dynastic pantheon and the cloister, specifically the unusual south-western pillar adjacent to the Porta Reial (Royal Entrance). The study explains the extent to which both had an aesthetic, persuasive and communicativ…

Visual, Material and Textual Evidence during the Middle Ages

    Open Access•Marta Serrano Coll•ARTICLE•Arts•2020

The aim of this study is to analyze the coronation ceremonies carried out in the Crown of Aragon throughout the Middle Ages. Although the pope granted most Western monarchies the right to hold these ceremonies in their own kingdoms in 1204, our study will address the mechanisms used to appoint kings both before and after the consolidation of these ceremonies, mechanisms which reflected the power struggles between the parties involved, that is, th…

  • The Self-Coronation of Peter the Ceremonious (1336)

    Jaume Aurell, Marta Serrano-Coll et al.•ARTICLE•Speculum•2014•References: 8

Everything was ready for the solemn rite of the anointing and crowning of Peter IV of Aragon (1336–87). The ceremony was set for 14 April 1336 in Zaragoza's San Salvador Cathedral. The celebrant was to be the archbishop of Zaragoza, Pedro López de Luna y Ximénez de Urrea (1318–45), to whom the honor fell as metropolitan of the kingdom's capital. However, that spring morning there was a heated discussion in the vestry shortly before the start of p…
