Upholding Human Dignity as a First Principle
This reflective article proposes a strategic principle for North Atlantic Treaty Orgnization (NATO) military chaplaincy services aimed at strengthening preventive efforts related to moral injury in war. Contemporary military research increasingly recognizes the moral, spiritual and existential consequences of warfare, which are not fully addressed by traditional psychiatric models, yet a growing body of scholarship highlights the role that chapla…
At the edge of war
Europe's rapid rearmament in response to Russia's war against Ukraine marks a significant shift away from the post-Cold War era of demilitarisation and expeditionary operations. Within this evolving security landscape, military chaplains (MCs) in NATO member and partner countries may increasingly find themselves operating on the edge of war. This reflective article asks what this new security reality may mean for military chaplaincy in Europe. Ch…
Fostering collaborative moral learning in residential care for people with intellectual disabilities

This study investigates using the arts to address these issues in a residential care setting. We specifically chose to collaborate with an artist who maintained an autonomous a…
Engaging in moral learning

It suggests that supporting veterans in dealing with questions about the good life and about the conduct of the military may be just as or even more important as reflecting on morally injurious events. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of engaging with seemingly mundane, everyday issues whe…
Creating moral space
The study emphasizes the moral significance of relational presence and the embedded independent position of MCs in addressing moral injury. Dutch MCs create a 'moral space' allowing veterans to explore moral concerns, re-establish self-trust, and recognize broader sociopolitical dimensions of moral injury. These findings highlight the importance of attuned, politicized, and confidential care in addressing moral injury, with implications for profe…
Framing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Process in Canada
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada helped to expose the trauma experienced by Indigenous peoples in Canada’s Indian Residential Schools (IRS), which were governed and run by government and church officials. In 2008, the Canadian government formally apologized for these residential schools. This apology was undermined, however, by a denial of colonial history by Canada at the G20 in 2009, revealing a rhetorical contradiction t…
