  • “Bordering on Treason”? Sir Raphael Cilento and Pre‐Second World War Fascism in Australia

Open Access•P Deery, Julie Kimber•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Politics &…•2019

Sir Raphael Cilento died on 16 April 1985 at the age of ninety‐two. The notice in the Canberra Times spoke of Cilento's “worldwide” reputation in tropical medicine, his contribution to the public health service in Queensland, and his role with the United Nations in the immediate post‐war years. In short, he was an “eminent son of Australia”. But Sir Raphael Cilento's halo has been tarnished by his persistent eugenicist beliefs and his later assoc…

The study of vagrancy forms part of a larger investigation into the social origins of law, the structures of inequality and the gendered and racially discriminatory aspects of societies. A full analysis of vagrancy in Australia must necessarily begin with the inherited traditions of its colonial master, its convict origins and the defensive nature of European settlement. While the former provided the moral and legal framework, the latter played a…

  • A nuisance to the community’

    Julie Kimber•ARTICLE•Journal of Australian Studies•2010•Cited by: 5

The charge of vagrancy dates back to medieval England. Its subjective application and minimal evidentiary requirements provided an appealing mechanism to punish recalcitrant behaviour. This article examines methods of exclusion via the application of vagrancy provisions in a small locality in New South Wales. It does so with a particular focus on one individual. By closely interrogating a wide range of public sources, the article illuminates the …

  • Joy

    Open Access•Rae Frances, Julie Kimber•ARTICLE•Public history review•2008

While there are a growing number of 'counter-hegemonic' monuments in Australia, the numerous workers' memorials commemorating heroic male figures ¬- coalminers, truck drivers, timber workers and wharf labourers - retain the exclusionary characteristic of traditional or 'institutional' memorialising. Many such memorials nourish a masculinist, albeit working class, vision of Australia's nation building efforts, while commemoration of the lives of w…

Job Committees, like shop committees in other industries, emerged in Broken Hill during the height of the Great Depression, thrived in the decade 1935-45, and all but vanished during the Cold War. The committees were a focal point for struggle and contestation between the various competing interest groups and ideologies vying for ascendancy in the local miners' union, the Workers Industrial Union of Australia. This study of job committees seeks t…

years ago that southern women have a decided edge on northern women in matrimonial chances. Formerly, northern men frequently married northern or southern women, but southern men rarely married northern women. Both studies were carried out at the same coeducational, interdenominational degree-granting Bible college located in the deep South. Both deal with (1) the sectionality (North, South) of the college's first-year students since 1933, (2) th…

  • Referred and Unreferred Patients. A Comparison

J A Morris Kimber, Julie Kimber•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1966

Professional psychotherapists and marriage counselors have often raised their eyebrows at the prospect of accepting unreferred or self-referred persons for psychotherapy or marriage counseling. This study demonstrates the similarity between the two groups in many respects, including personality profiles and financial risk. There is no evidence that the professionally referred subject is substantially different from the person who looks up his psy…
