  • Between Numbers and Narratives”

Open Access•Mark Milton Chambers, Christine Sellers et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Justice•2025

This study utilizes a collaborative and historical research approach to examine how and why environmental and socioeconomic burdens have accumulated over time in Port Arthur, Texas, especially on its west side. As a majority non-White city ringed by refining and petrochemical facilities—including the second largest oil refinery in North America—Port Arthur has long exemplified the “sacrifice zones” discussed in environmental justice literature an…

  • History of Risk Assessments of the Organophosphate Pesticide Chlorpyrifos at the US Environmental Protection Agency, 1980‒2024

Christine Sellers, Ellen Kohl et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2025•References: 25

This article examines the history of risk assessments of the organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), especially after a ban on household uses in 2000. Federal funding enabled more noncorporate and place-based scientific investigations of this pesticide’s harms, including child-cohort epidemiology of populations impacted through environmental injustices. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been the epicenter of national environmental justice (EJ) work since President Bill Clinton signed Executive Order (EO) 12898 in 1994. Despite this continued focus, black, Indigenous, and people of color and low-income communities still bear the brunt of environmental harms. Although the EO began to institutionalize EJ work within EPA and across the federal government, implementing EPA's…

  • From ‘marginal to marginal’

Ellen Kohl, Marianne Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Sociology•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 8

How damaging was the Trump administration to environmental justice (EJ) efforts and policy? Since federal EJ oversight at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is governed by executive order, rather than statute, approaches to it have varied by presidential administration. In this paper, we draw on interviews with current and recently retired EPA employees along with staffing and budget data, to examine how EJ has historically b…

  • The Role of Actigraphy in the Study of Sleep and Circadian Rhythms

    Sonia Ancoli-Israel, Sonia Ancoli‐israel et al.•ARTICLE•Sleep•2003

In summary, although actigraphy is not as accurate as PSG for determining some sleep measurements, studies are in general agreement that actigraphy, with its ability to record continuously for long time periods, is more reliable than sleep logs which rely on the patients' recall of how many times they woke up or how long they slept during the night and is more reliable than observations which only capture short time periods. Actigraphy can provid…
