  • The Covid-19 global pandemic and allostatic load among a cohort of Black and Latina transgender women living with HIV

Open Access•Ashleigh J Rich, Huijun Jiang et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Sexual Orientation…•2025

This exploratory study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on stress biomarkers and allostatic load for Black and Latina transgender women living with HIV (BLTWLH), as well as COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, and vaccination status. LITE Plus is a longitudinal cohort study of BLTWLH designed to identify pathways linking biopsychosocial stress to HIV co-morbidities. Participants were enrolled between October 2019-June 2022. Descri…

  • Access to healthcare among transgender women living with and without HIV in the United States

    Open Access•Talia A Loeb, Sarah M Murray et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Gender minority stress was associated with increased barriers to healthcare access among TW in the US, regardless of HIV status. Resilience factors did not mediate this effect. Interventions aiming to increase healthcare access among TW can be aided by efforts to mitigate drivers of gender minority stress and improve patient experiences in healthcare facilities

  • Effects of Race and Gender Classifications on Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk Estimates for Clinical Decision-Making in a Cohort of Black Transgender Women

Open Access•Tonia Poteat, Elle Lett et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2023

Introduction: Despite their dynamic, socially constructed, and imprecise nature, both race and gender are included in common risk calculators used for clinical decision-making about statin therapy for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) prevention. Methods and Materials: We assessed the effect of manipulating six different race-gender categories on ASCVD risk scores among 90 Black transgender women. Results: Risk scores varied by opera…

  • Exploring strategies for PrEP adherence and dosing preferences in the context of sexualized recreational drug use among MSM

    Elizabeth F Closson, Jennifer A Mitty et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

The use of recreational drugs while having sex is associated with increased HIV incidence among men who have sex with men (MSM). Taking a daily antiretroviral pill, or pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a biomedical intervention to prevent HIV. However, the efficacy of PrEP is closely tied with high levels of adherence. While PrEP has the potential to reduce HIV acquisition, the use of recreational drugs may impede adherence. We explored percepti…

  • Negotiating sexual safety in the era of biomedical HIV prevention

Jowanna Malone, Jennifer Syvertsen et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2018

Up to two-thirds of new cases of HIV transmission between gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in the USA are attributed to primary relationships. Understanding the relationship dynamics and sexual agreements of male-male couples can provide insight into HIV transmission patterns and prevention needs in this population. The daily use of antiretroviral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective in preventing HIV, but its nego…

  • Designing a sexual network study of men who have sex with other men

Katie B Biello, Jowanna Malone et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2017

Black and Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) have higher rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than their White counterparts. Differences in sexual networks have been hypothesized to play an important role in the observed racial/ethnic disparities in risk. However, concerns about the acceptability and feasibility of conducting sociocentric sexual network studies have left a dearth of data on th…
