  • Erin Shay, in collab. with Lazare Wambadang, A grammar of Pévé

    Open Access•Joseph Lovestrand•ARTICLE•Linguistique et langues africaines•2021

A grammar of Pévé is Shay’s third major descriptive work on Chadic languages following a dissertation on East Dangla (Shay 1999) and a collaborative work on Hdi grammar (Frajzyngier 2002), and preceding a fourth grammar due for publication this year (Shay 2021). There are different assumptions about the nature of verbhood and clausehood as well as disagreements over how to interpret morphosyntactic marking in particular languages. Despite…

  • Plural addressee marker and grammaticalization in Barayin

    Joseph Lovestrand•ARTICLE•Brill's Journal of Afroasiatic…•2018

Synchronically, the pronominal forms in Barayin with first-person dual number must now be combined with a plural addressee enclitic, nà , to create a first-person plural pronoun. This path is identical to what has been documented in Philippine-type languages. T…
