Internal quality assurance as substitute governance: Institutional capacity and quality enhancement in Lebanese higher education
Lebanon lacks a national quality assurance agency for its higher education system, resulting in fragmented, poorly coordinated quality governance. Consequently, private universities have developed internal quality assurance systems to maintain credibility and accountability amid economic and political instability. This article examines how internal quality assurance operates in such governance and how it shapes teaching, learning and institutiona…
The Cabana model 2017–2022: Research and training synergy to facilitate bioinformatics applications in Latin America
The CABANA project (Capacity Building for Bioinformatics in Latin America) was funded by the UK’s Global Challenges Research Fund in 2017 with the aim to strengthen the bioinformatics capacity and extend its applications in Latin America focused on three challenge areas – communicable diseases, sustainable food production and protection of biodiversity. For 5 years, the project executed activities including data analysis workshops, train-the-trai…
Ice dynamic response to two modes of surface lake drainage on the Greenland ice sheet
Supraglacial lake drainage on the Greenland ice sheet opens surface-to-bed connections, reduces basal friction, and temporarily increases ice flow velocities by up to an order of magnitude. Existing field-based observations of lake drainages and their impact on ice dynamics are limited, and focus on one specific draining mechanism. Here, we report and analyse global positioning system measurements of ice velocity and elevation made at five locati…
Protecting academic freedom in changing times: The role of Heads of Departments
In changing times for higher education that are dominated by a neoliberal ideology, we set out to uncover how Heads of Departments (HoDs) perceive their role with respect to supporting their staff and their academic freedom. Freedom to pursue academic research is seen as key to the generation of new knowledge yet it is potentially constrained by funding regimes and university accountability systems. As HoDs operate at the interface between univer…
