The Church at Baḥan (Kh. Kafr Sibb) in ʿEmek-Ḥefer
In 1953, an archaeological excavation was conducted on the hill near Tell Baḥan by the late Jacob Ory on behalf of the Israel Department of Antiquities. At the foot of the hill extends a wide agricultural landscape, including the remains of terraces and winepresses. On the hill itself, the remains of a basilica-type church were uncovered. Presented here for the first time is a precise plan of the church, which includes a narthex, annex rooms flan…
Making the Invisible Visible
This study examines textile remains preserved on metal objects retrieved from burial contexts in western Upper Galilee, including personal adornments, amuletic artifacts, musical instruments and grave goods. These finds shed light on funerary practices and customs throughout the Late Roman and Byzantine periods, from the fourth to the midseventh century CE.Microscopic examinations of the metal objects revealed remnants of organic material, suggest…
Lamps and Lighting Devices in Late Antique Funerary Liturgies of the Levantine Provinces of the Later Roman Empire
Pottery lamps are frequent occurrences in late antique Levantine mortuary assemblages. This holds particularly true for communal tombs, in which their numbers can sometimes reach up to a few hundred pieces in a single burial space. The present paper distinguishes four major locations where lamps were generally deposited in these mortuary contexts: 1) the outer entrance areas of tombs, including the steps descending to tomb doors, 2) small niches …
Christian burials in Western Galilee and the emergence of christian local mortuary traditions in Late Antiquity
The goal of the research project described and discussed here is the meticulous assessment of the tombs and cemetery sections investigated in two geographically fairly restricted regions: Western Galilee and the broader area of Caesarea Philippi, both lying in the former Late Roman province of Phoenicia. With the generous support of the Israel Antiquities Authority, we were granted access to several mortuary assemblages that have remained unpubli…
The monastery of Eusebius in Khirbet er-Ras (Kefar Truman)
The present paper publishes the archaeological remains of a monastery church excavated in 1958 at Khirbet er-Ras (Kefar Truman), Israel. The description of the architectural remains, including the three-aisled basilica and the structures surrounding it, is based on the archival documentation. This is followed by the detailed description and analysis of the church's mosaic pavements, preserved in the nave and in both side-aisles, with special emph…
