  • Disordered selves

    R Hallam•ARTICLE•Contemporary Social Science•2012•References: 7

The idea that persons, minds and selves can be 'disordered' is discussed from historical and philosophical standpoints. It is argued that the identification of mind with brain is a false path when explanations of human nature are sought in the natural sciences. This has led to a strong bias towards physical treatments for psychological distress. Use of the term 'disorder' allows biological and social scientific explanations to exist side by side,…

  • Persons with acquired profound hearing loss (APHL)

Open Access•R Hallam, Paul Ashton et al.•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2008•References: 13

The study examined the impact of acquired profound hearing loss (APHL) on the relationship between the hearing impaired person and their normally hearing close family member, usually a partner, and identified the kinds of adjustment leading to maintenance or deterioration of the relationship. The participants were 25 people with APHL and 25 family members, interviewed separately in their own home. Analysis of the interview transcripts adopted a g…

  • Sorcery of the Self

    Open Access•Kieron O’connor, Kieron P O'Connor et al.•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•2000

In this article, we first examine current cognitive and social constructionist (SC) notions of self and we suggest that although `self is central to both approaches, it is not satisfactorily defined by either because the discussion of self remains at an epistemological level. The lack of genuine definition leads to difficulties specifying the properties `self possesses and to dilemmas about how to draw boundaries between public and private experi…

  • Fearlessness and courage

    Open Access•Kieron O’connor, K O'Connor et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1985•Cited by: 1

An attempt was made to replicate the finding that decorated bomb‐disposal operators show lower cardiac activity under stress than do comparable but non‐decorated operators. The performance under stress of three groups of soldiers (decorated operators, non‐decorated operators, less experienced soldiers) was assessed by behavioural, psychophysiological, and subjective measures. The original result, showing lower cardiac activity under stress among …

  • An experimental analysis of fearlessness and courage

Open Access•D Cox, David N Cox et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1983•Cited by: 1

In an attempt to assess the performance under stress of people who had received awards for gallantry, the subjective, behavioural and psychophysiological reactions of a group of seven decorated bomb‐disposal operators were measured during a conflict test. Compared to a group of seven equally experienced and successful, but non‐decorated, bomb‐disposal operators, the decorated subjects maintained a lower cardiac rate when making difficult discrimi…
