A Teutonic stronghold in the Carpathian Mountains
The HiLands Project (2018-2022) brought the opportunity to investigate several main communication corridors within the Curvature Carpathians. At the northern end of Rucăr-Bran Pass we had a great surprise, finding in the woods three strongholds, just one kilometre west of Bran Castle. Several trips on the mountain and two short digging sessions uncovered two hillforts made by the Teutonic Order, and a third one, shortly after they left. Hidden in…
Roman frontier crossing Mocanului Valley
Several years ago, within Limes Transalutanus Project (2014-2017), we dealt with several segments of the Roman limes in Teleorman County. Briefly, that meant aerial and terrestrial survey, geologic sampling and geophysics, in most of the cases. The old renditions of the frontier line, as being a rampart without a ditch, were intriguing and unusual, thus they had to be checked in the field, including by test digging. One spot chosen for a complex …
Recent archaeological researches in the Vârghiș Gorges karst area (Eastern Carpathians, Romania). A synthesis of the 2014–2020 campaigns
The Vârghiș Gorges karst system (Perșani Mountains, Eastern Carpathians) constituted a point of interest for speleologists, paleontologists and archaeologists since the second half of the 19th century. Their efforts succeeded in highlighting the notable archaeological potential of the area, although the actual research results were not always thoroughly reported. Since 2014, our team reunited specialists from 10 different institutions and various…
Lidar Views of Bronze and Iron Age Hill-Top Sites in the South-Eastern Carpathians
The article offers a glimpse into the potential of a series of recent LiDAR based explorations, in cases combined with geophysical prospections, pin-pointed excavation and radiocarbon dating of enclosures, to contribute to the better understanding of the anthropic modified relief morphology and layout of several hill-top sites from South-Eastern Transylvania dated in the Bronze and Iron Ages. The study area, which is mostly forested, gathers one …
Unhiding Forested Landscapes. The Archaeological Index of South-Eastern Carpathians
Starting with late 2018, a new archaeological research project has been unfolding in the framework funded by the Romanian Governmental Unit for Research and Development (UEFISCDI) dedicated to top fundamental research, as one of the few winners of 2016 edition (the single to date) of ‘Complex Projects for Frontier Research’ competition. The Project, whose aims and methods will be shortly presented further, is entitled ‘Hidden Landscapes: Explorat…
Archaeological excavations at the roman fort Băneasa in the summer 2017
Tumuli, Roads and Plots. Decoding the Monumental Funerary Space of the 4th-3rd Centuries Bc Kallatis
The study focusses on the monumental elements of the 4th-3rd centuries BC cemeteries of Kallatis: the use of large tumuli, the implementation of a systematized network of funerary plots, the extent of the burial grounds, the discovery of a series of built chamber tombs under tumuli with elements of decorated architecture, including mural paintings and exceptional presence of a statue topping a tumulus. The detection and morphological characterisa…
The Drones Are Coming. What to Choose? Low and Medium Altitude Aerial Archaeology on Limes Transalutanus
Aerial archaeology has more than one century of tradition as a valuable research method. Like archaeology, the aerial reconnaissance is undergoing dynamic changes. The field must face the profound conceptual challenges raised by the evolving demands of archaeologists. In addition, aerial archaeology has to adapt its own methods in order to constantly incorporate new technologies such as: thermal vision, LiDAR and also advanced photogrammetry proc…
