Exploring Self-Reported Emotional Intelligence of Probation and Institutional Correctional Officers
Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to varying levels of acceptable emotions and the ability to perceive, express, and employ them appropriately. There is a paucity of research literature exploring the EI of correctional officers. To bridge the gap, we addressed two research questions: What levels of EI are self-reported by correctional officers? and How do those levels differ between occupational and the personal demographic variables of the offi…
Student perceptions of weekly synchronous team quizzes in an online statistics course
In a fully online college introductory statistics class, we incorporated a flexible synchronous course component to provide instructor immediacy and support students who are lacking sufficient prior knowledge when a new topic is introduced. We describe a learning cycle with weekly team quizzes inspired by the readiness assurance process of team-based learning; we interviewed eight students for their perceptions of the course structure. Team quizz…
An Item-Based Revalidation of the Florida Pretrial Risk Assessment Instrument
Scholars and practitioners continue to examine the growing pretrial detainee population. These individuals have not been convicted of a crime, and yet they sit in detention, taxing jail facilities and their limited budgets. Pretrial risk assessment tools have been created to identify individuals who can be released prior to trial, without jeopardizing community safety. The current study revalidates items included in the Florida Pretrial Risk Asse…

Development and Implementation of a Capstone Experience in Criminal Justice
During the academic year 2015–2016, our department implemented a capstone experience for all criminal justice majors. The contemporary scholarly literature on developing a capstone in a criminology/criminal justice program is limited. Therefore, we focused on developing a capstone experience that would be a high impact practice opportunity, take advantage of the existing Internship option, and be consistent with our program-level learning outcome…
Exploring Judicial Discretion and Correctional Policy in the Practice of Violation of probation Holds in One Unique County Facility in Northwest Florida
A unique position of one county correctional facility in northwest Florida raises questions about jail crowding, costs, due process, and judicial discretion. Probationers arrested and held for first appearance may be subject to a violation of probation (VOP) hold by the judge. Even if they can bond out on the new charge, they may remain in jail for 5– to 10 days. In analyzing court documents, this case study found that the use of VOP holds result…
The use of multiple intelligences in criminal justice education
This research explores Gardner's (1983) theory of multiple intelligences (MI) as it relates to career choice among criminal justice majors. The identification of the predominate intelligences of criminal justice majors may help students identify what types of careers suit them best, based on their MI strengths and weaknesses.
