The Precariousness of Freedom
The Senegal Liberation Database Lesson engages with the complexities of emancipation from slavery in French West Africa in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. As a historian of the African diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean who regularly teaches world history, I rarely pause to consider the effect of the slave trade's collapse in the nineteenth century on the expansion of coerced labor domestically throughout West Africa. …
Lions in Africa
In this article, I examine the experiences of three Black American expats and former Lincoln University in Pennsylvania classmates of Kwame Nkrumah: Robert E. Lee, Robert T. Freeman Jr., and Franklin H. Williams. I argue how pivotal Lincoln was as a testing ground for cross-cultural interactions with Black American and African students, particularly in the 1930s and 1940s, during the rise of anticolonial nationalism. Then, I trace how these men r…

The Last Turtlemen of the Caribbean
Illuminating the entangled histories of the people and commodities that circulated across the Atlantic, Sharika D. Crawford assesses the Caribbean as a waterscape where imperial and national governments vied to control the profitability of the sea. Crawford places the green and hawksbill sea turtles and the Caymanian turtlemen who hunted them at the center of this waterscape. The story of the humble turtle and its hunter, she argues, came to play…
What do migration and meteorology have to do with Latin American studies? Bridges across disciplines at the United States Naval Academy
This essay explores how faculty from three different disciplines (applied linguistics, history, and meteorology), all with expertise in Latin America, have promoted an interdisciplinary approach toward Latin American studies through their study of migration and climate. The essay begins by reviewing the history and significance of the U.S. Department of Defense’s LREC initiative on tertiary Spanish language education. The essay then describes how…
An Aqueous Territory
Disputas marítimas en el Caribe colombiano
There has been a long history of turtle hunting in the Greater Caribbean, especially in Colombian waters around the archipelago of San Andrés and Providence. This article is focused on Colombia’s efforts to affirm its national borders and to strengthen its control over its territorial waters, and on how the new regulations that these measures entail affect turtle hunters in the Caribbean Sea. Using travel stories, newspapers from Jamaica, Colombi…
A contact zone
Turtle fishing has a long history in the Caribbean. Early Caribbean accounts from New World sailors and adventurers noted an abundance of the marine reptile, which quickly became desired for its delicious meat and beautiful shell. Nowhere was the presence of sea turtle more pronounced than in the adjacent banks, cays and reefs of the Western Caribbean, where Europeans also noted the abilities developed by the indigenous peoples of the region to c…
Salt and the Colombian State
A Transnational World Fractured but Not Forgotten
This article examines British West Indian migration to the Colombian archipelago of San Andrés and Providence in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. While the United Fruit plantations, Panama Canal, oil fields in Venezuela, and railroad projects in Central America generated a strong demand for a large West Indian workforce, no such development took place on San Andrés and Providence. As a result, the profile of West Indian migration l…
