Toxicities Caused by Head and Neck Cancer Treatments and Their Influence on the Development of Malnutrition
Malnutrition poses a significant problem for oncology patients, resulting in fatalities within this population. Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) are at high risk, with up to 90% developing malnutrition. Common treatments used for HNC can often lead to adverse side effects, including oral health conditions, gastrointestinal upsets, and several metabolic changes. Consequently, treatments can cause inadequate nutritional intake, resulting in…

William Lane and 'New Australia
William Lane's move to Paraguay in 1893 has been variously misunderstood by Australian historians. This move was not an aberration, but a natural consequence of his self-proclaimed place in a long tradition of international Utopian socialism. His development as a Utopian socialist, and the form and content of his beliefs, can be traced through an examination of his life and writings. When placed in this context, Lane's words and deeds take on a c…
Social skills and somatotype
The hypothesis that somatotype is closely related to social skills and that the response of patients with social disability to social skills training might also relate to these genetically controlled factors has been supported. Twenty‐one subjects seeking treatment for social phobia were assessed by interview, videotape, diary, and somatotype measures. Ectomorphs used less non‐verbal communication and endomorphs were more restless. Women used few…

The Eternal Slum
Municipal Socialism, Enterprise and Trading in the Victorian City
By the closing decades of the nineteenth century the continued and rapid growth of cities had given rise to acute problems of municipal policy on both sides of the Atlantic. America had come to its urban experience relatively late – the population of Chicago at the time the Liverpool & Manchester Railway opened was 50 people – but between 1880 and 1910 the critical shift had taken place in the United States to a population which was over 50 per c…

The Breakdown of Gild and Corporation Control Over the Handicraft and Retail Trade in London
T HE waning of gild control over London's crafts and retail trades in the late I 7th and i 8th centuries has been referred to so frequently in the course of general economic histories that the process has come to be taken for granted.1 Yet the outlines of the period during which gild functions atrophied remain surprisingly blurred. Even Unwin in his study of the Gilds and Companies of London affords only ten pages to the gilds' loss of their powe…
