Olive tree at the intersection of environment, public health, and One Health
The olive tree and its derivatives—olives, olive oil, and their by-products—are foundational to the Mediterranean diet and are increasingly recognized for their roles in nutrition, medicine, and ecological sustainability. Indeed, one of the most prominent examples of sustainable production and consumption paradigm in a changing climate lies in the olive sector, approached within One Health framework, i.e., the interconnectedness of human health w…
Synthetic cooling agent in oral nicotine pouch products marketed as ‘Flavour-Ban Approved’
ONP products marketed as 'Flavour-Ban Approved' or 'unflavoured' contain flavouring agents, proving that the manufacturer's advertising is misleading. Synthetic coolants such as WS-3 can provide a robust cooling sensation with reduced sensory irritancy, thereby increasing product appeal and use. Regulators need to develop effective strategies for the control of odourless sensory additives used by the industry to bypass flavour bans
Green chemistry as just chemistry
Differences in flavourant levels and synthetic coolant use between USA, EU and Canadian Juul products
Tested US/Canadian Juul e-liquids contained higher flavour concentrations than EU products, likely reflecting adaptation to user preferences. In EU, 'Mint' e-liquid, menthol is partially substituted with the synthetic coolant WS-3 that elicits a cooling effect like menthol but lacks its distinct 'minty' odour. The inhalational safety of WS-3 is unknown. The use of an emulsifier in US/Canadian 'Mango' Juul e-liquid may be necessary to keep the pro…
Toward Green Nano
Commercial and research interest in nanotechnology has exploded in recent years, with nearly US$9 billion in investment from public and private sources in 2005. While the list of potential applications for nanotechnologies continues to grow, there is increasing pressure from governments and researchers alike to understand the implications of this new class of materials. The emerging field of green nano applies green chemistry and engineering prin…
