The Dynamics of Celluloid on the Road to Independence
This research looks at the films from two companies both dealing with oil, one petroleum, Royal Dutch Shell, the other vegetable, Unilever's subsidiary UAC, just before and after the Nigerian independence. Concentrating on films (that also deal with products other than oil) from this period enables us to consider a set of representations that reflect the ideas of the company on a local and international scale as films were used to promote their r…

Lon Moussinac and The Spectators' Criticism in France (1931-34)
Between November 1931 and January 1934 the readers of the French communist daily L'Humanit were invited to become their own film critics. Bert Hogenkamp tells the story of this rare experiment, which briefly gave a voice to those many who may make history but seldom get a chance to write it
Not quite prepared for always prepared
During his short term as Foreign Secretary in 1951 Herbert Morrison became hopelessly embroiled in the case of the East German documentary film Immer Bereit (Always Prepared). When a copy of this film about the 1950 Whitsun Youth Festival in East Berlin was submitted to the customs for import by the National Union of Students, the Foreign Office was alarmed. Another copy of Immer Bereit had previously been seized in a raid on the headquarters of …
Indonesia Calling
Like the rest of the historical world, labour historians have, somewhat belatedly, discovered the importance of films and other audio-visual products as historical evidence. Still photographs, films, videos and sound recordings are seriously being collected by labour archives. Labour history periodicals like Labor History (USA) and Le mouvement social (France) are regularly devoting space to films and television programs. Cornell University Press…
Film and the First World War
The years between 1914 and 1918 form a crucial period in world history as well as in film history. For some time, it was believed that a serious debate about World War I had been made redundant by the events that followed later. Today, however, it is clear that the Great War has become the focus of critical attention once again and it is no accident that this renewed interest coincided with the collapse of the Berlin Wall. This book emphasises cu…
