Drowning deaths in West Bengal, India
INTRODUCTION: Drowning burdens in low- and middle-income contexts are underestimated, as current data collection systems gather inadequate data. We conducted one of the largest community-based surveys to date capturing fatal drowning data across age, gender and rurality, focusing on the state of West Bengal, India. METHODS: A resource-efficient community knowledge approach was used to conduct an observational community-based survey where meetings…
Assessment of Air Pollution Mitigation Measures on Secondary Pollutants PM10 and Ozone Using Chemical Transport Modelling over Megacity Delhi, India
Sporadic efforts have been introduced to control emissions in Delhi, but the air quality has declined further due to the rapid development of different sectors. In this study, the impact of various mitigation scenarios on air quality for PM10, ozone, and its precursors are studied using a chemical transport model, namely WRF-Chem. The Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research emission inventory was modified and introduced into the WRF-Che…
Media coverage and framing of road traffic safety in India
Background Media coverage of road traffic collisions (RTCs) may influence preventative action. India experiences some of the highest RTC mortality and morbidity rates globally, but advocacy and effective action to mitigate this has been limited. We conducted an analysis of Indian media in English to assess whether coverage met the WHO’s Reporting on Road Safety guidelines for evidence-based reporting of RTCs. Methods English-language articles pub…
Challenges in Documenting Non-Fatal Drowning Disability in Bangladesh
Limited access to health care and the lack of robust data systems means non-fatal drownings are largely missed in low-and middle-income countries. We report morbidity among individuals who experienced non-fatal drowning in the Barishal Division, Bangladesh. A representative household survey was conducted in the Barishal Division in southern Bangladesh between September 2016 and February 2017, covering a population of 386,016. The burden of non-fa…
Interventions for Child Drowning Reduction in the Indian Sundarbans
Drowning is a leading cause of child death in the coastal Sundarbans region of India due to the presence of open water, lack of supervision and poor infrastructure, but no prevention programs are currently implemented. The World Health Organization has identified interventions that may prevent child drowning in rural low-and middle-income country contexts, including the provision of home-based barriers, supervised childcare, swim and rescue train…
Opportunities for gender transformative approaches in a community-based drowning reduction program in Bangladesh
The Anchal program both adapted to and shaped community gender norms and roles. The program has well-established relationships in the community and can be leveraged to implement gender transformative activities to improve gender-based equity. Health programs can broaden their impacts and target social determinants of health like gender equity to increase program sustainability and promote equitable health outcomes
Complexity in Implementing Community Drowning Reduction Programs in Southern Bangladesh
Living and geographical conditions in Bangladesh expose children to a high risk of drowning. Two programs operating in the Barishal Division of Bangladesh aim to reduce drowning risk through the provision of crèches (Anchal) and swim and rescue classes (SwimSafe). Anchal provides a safe environment with early childhood education to children aged 1−5 years old, while SwimSafe teaches children aged 6−10 years old basic swimming and rescue skills. D…
