  • The Cambridge History of Socialism

Open Access•Stefan Berger, Thomas Welskopp et al.•BOOK•Cambridge History of Socialism•2022

This volume describes the various movements and parties, across all six continents, that wanted social change through state transformation. It begins with a reconstruction of social democracy's trajectories from the 1870s until the present. The evolution of socialism on different continents is illustrated through a number of national case studies. Experiments at a subnational level (for example, municipal socialism) are also explored, as are the …

  • German Trade Unions in the Nineteenth Century

    Open Access•Thomas Welskopp•ARTICLE•German History•2019

The article explores the origins of trade unions in the nineteenth-century industrializing German economy. In German territories—in contrast to the United Kingdom and the United States—the labour movement emerged as a political movement, from which trade unions developed relatively late, under the auspices of Social Democratic Party initiatives, remaining under threat throughout the 1870s. We therefore have particular reason to examine the sociol…

The article offers a new perspective on the economic and business history of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It argues that the historiographical emphasis on the “failure” of the East German planned economy should be replaced by an analysis of those factors which allowed the GDR economy to exist as long as it did and the effects they had on the system as a whole. To do so, the article first provides an overview of the structural conditions …

  • Kapitalismus und Konzepte von Arbeit

    Thomas Welskopp•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2017•Cited by: 1

This article analyzes the role of free wage labor in Karl Marx’s and Max Weber’s theories of capitalism. Both view free wage labor as constitutive for capitalism, since, inMarx’s words, there is no capitalwithout a worker in full command of his labor power.Weber believed that it was more the fear of losing his or her only available source of income that motivated the worker to expend his or her labor power. Nevertheless, it took a long time for f…

  • Bottom of the barrel

    Open Access•Thomas Welskopp•ARTICLE•Behemoth•2013

Although the deep structural crisis of the American “Old-Time Saloon” and the beer brewing industry was self-inflicted, National Prohibition hit them hard in 1920. Whereas the saloon completely vanished from the scene, giving way to the more or less clandestine “speakeasy”, the brewing companies which did not go out of business altogether or did not resort to the production of legal surrogates like “near beer”, strove desperately after strategies…

  • Crossing the Boundaries? Dynamics of Contention Viewed from the Angle of a Comparative Historian

    Open Access•Thomas Welskopp•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•2004

Comparative social history is still grappling with the problems raised in the debate about history's “cultural turn”. And while a new “social turn” seems imminent at the moment, this means a new departure into an actor-oriented analysis of institutions (including social movements and all forms of contentious politics) beyond the “cultural turn”, incorporating a host of compelling insights into the cultural constitution of social reality – and not…
