    I was asked in this talk to say something about how I became interested in the sort of research which has marked my career: the investigation of the relationship between the arts and politics, mainly in eighteenth-century France, but in other regimes as well. This interest in a sense was the indirect result of my Calvinist upbringing. My parents, North-of-Ireland evangelical Presbyterians, enforced a very strict regime. No one in my family was al…

    This is an unconventional history of architecture during the French Revolution. It reveals how the French revolutionaries attempted to use architecture and urban planning to implant the ideals of the Revolution in the minds of the citizens of the new state.
