Slaving and Trafficking in Ming China
This article challenges arguments that slavery was not important in early modern China by examining slaving and trafficking practices during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Rather than applying economic and maritime-centric analytical categories derived from Atlantic slavery studies, it calls for the use of contextually defined categories as operational units of observation. Through a systematic digital processing of the Annals of the Ming Dynasty …
Status, Power, and Punishments
In the past four decades or so, China scholars have shone a new light on the history of labour in late imperial China, particularly on the role of the household as a unit of production and on the contribution of women to commercial production and family income. Beyond members of the kin group itself, attention is seldom paid to the individuals brought into the Chinese households solely to provide additional manpower. To “break the carapace” of th…
Insiders by Analogy
This article seeks to reinforce arguments that a genuinely global history of slavery is possible only if we examine the nature and dynamics of chattel and bonded status in parts of the world that have been largely ignored in slavery studies. Although scholars have begun to reassess the dynamics of slavery in early-modern Asia, a comprehensive study of slaving practices in China remains to be written. A careful examination of the provisions on ‘sl…

Serving and Working for Others
Over the past decades, “wage labor” has been a lingering issue in studies on the development patterns of late imperial China. The legal reconfiguration of the category of “hired laborers” ( gugong 僱工) between 1588 and 1788, in particular, has been foregrounded as a salient manifestation of the “incipient capitalism” going hand in hand with the emergence of a “free” labor market and with the decline of bound labor. Questioning the preconception th…
