Who Is (Not) Afraid of Immigration? A Mediation Analysis Into the Ambivalence of Christian Religiosity for Immigration‐Related Attitudes
This article systematically investigates the mediators linking Christian religiosity to immigration‐related attitudes in Germany. On the basis of current, representative data (ALLBUS 2023), four mediation models reveal multiple pathways through which religiosity shapes such attitudes. These pathways correspond to three distinct functions of religion: economic, value‐based, and social. Specifically, religious optimism mitigates perceptions of econ…
Are there Public Effects of Religious Education
This quantitative study examines the effects of religious education, in conjunction with other religious and non-religious factors, on the civic attitudes of Christians under the age of 30 in Germany. The multivariate analyses are based on a recent population representative sample (6th Church Membership Survey). The results provide modest evidence of a limited direct and indirect contribution of religious education to civic attitudes. In addition…
Religious coping with contingency as a resource for democracy
This quantitative study empirically examines the mediating factors between Christian religiosity, political trust, and populist attitudes. As a novel approach, we ask whether religious coping with contingency reduces anxiety among religious citizens. Given that anxiety can reduce institutional trust and increase the appeal of populism, religiously reduced anxiety could support democratic attitudes. In addition, generalized social trust and accept…
Verbundenheit, Vertrauen, Austrittsbereitschaft
Why do church members (not) feel a sense of belonging and trust towards the Protestant Church in Germany? This paper conceptualizes the emergence and dynamic change of institutional belonging and trust as a multidimensional interplay of individual religiosity, biography, public discourses, social micro-context, pastoral interactions, and congregational activity. The empirical analysis identifies retention factors that stop members from leaving th…
Monetized Religion in the Public Church
The quantitative study undertakes a systematic investigation of the church-related donation practice in the context of the Protestant Church in Germany. The characteristic logics of membership and participation in this publicly regulated institutionalized church are considered as well as the multidimensionality of donation practice. Religious donations are located at the interface of the individual and the church institution. Key explanatory fact…
