  • Unpacking the ‘paradox’ of disease prevention and environmentally sustainable healthcare

    Anand Bhopal•ARTICLE•Journal of Medical Ethics•2026

  • Priority setting for environmentally sustainable health care

Open Access•Anand Bhopal, Martin Hensher et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet Planetary Health•2025•References: 3

Priority setting in health care is a research and practice area at the intersection of medicine, ethics, and economics, which aims to systematically and transparently evaluate the value for money of health services to support fair resource allocation. Three widely accepted principles for fair priority setting are cost-effectiveness, priority to the worse off, and financial risk protection, with a wide range of other contested criteria. Conceptual…

  • Net Zero is not enough

    Open Access•Colin Sue-Chue-Lam, Anand Bhopal et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

Net Zero is the dominant framework for organising health system decarbonisation. Yet throughout Net Zero’s rise to prominence, greenhouse gas emissions have remained on a dangerous trajectory. In this analysis, we synthesise strands of Net Zero critique from the climate policy literature, examine their implications for health systems and briefly present an alternative framework for decarbonisation. We begin by reviewing three families of Net Zero…

  • Strength in numbers? Grouping, fund allocation and coordination amongst the neglected tropical diseases

Open Access•Anand Bhopal, Thomas Callender et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2013

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) is a term used to describe a heterogeneous group united not by pathophysiology or geography, but by their perpetuating the poverty of “invisible people”. Their burden is laid on one billion of the world’s poorest, who are both at greater risk of contracting the diseases, and of being trapped in poverty by the ensuing effects on their health [1]. The diseases tend to co–exist and can be found in 149 of the 193 co…

  • PP06 Cardiovascular Risk Factor Patterns in Long-Settled Roma and Recently Settled Indian Populations

Anand Bhopal, Raj S Bhopal•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2013

Background Linguistic and genetic evidence shows that Romani people, now numbering around 10-12 million in Europe, originate from North India. Romanis are thought to have migrated from North India around 10th-11th Century AD. Cardiovascular health is extremely poor in recently settled Indians living in Europe. Diabetes is also highly prevalent. As Romanis emigrated from India, we hypothesised their cardiovascular health would be similar to recent…
