  • Laser Cleaning and Patina Depth Profiles of New and Ancient Copper Coins

    Open Access•L Torrisi, M Cutroneo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026

This work presents and discusses a study of the oxidized patina on copper-based coins. Patina layers were characterized after thermal treatments on various coins and calibration samples using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, which was employed to measure oxide layer thicknesses. Laser ablation of copper-based samples was carried out with an ns pulsed Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm. The ablation yield was measured based on selected laser …

  • Old Fragments of Architectural Ceramic Structures of the Sixth Century BCE from the Archaeological Museum “Bernabò Brea” (Lipari) Analysed Using a Portable XRF System

    Open Access•A Italiano, M Cutroneo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•References: 2

In the context of a study on selected fragments of ancient architecture belonging to a collection of the archaeological museum “Luigi Bernabò Brea” in Lipari (Aeolian Islands, Messina, Italy), we analysed, using the non-destructive X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) method, dozens of artefacts dating back to the sixth century BCE. The aim was to identify the origin of the raw materials used by craftsmen in the production of ceramic artefacts. The quantitat…

  • Evidence of Copper and Iron Deposits of the Protohistoric City of Temesa

Open Access•Virgilio Vecchio, Maurizio Cannatà et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2023

With the name ‘Temesa’ (Latin Tempsa), the ancients identified a settlement located along the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, cited by sources as an international metal exchange emporium. The town is mentioned by Homer as being famous in the ancient world for the production of bronze, and in the I century A.D. Strabo wrote that there were rich copper mines near the city. Many years of study led to the recognition of Temesa as a complex urban system…

  • RBS, Pixe, Ion-Microbeam and SR-FTIR Analyses of Pottery Fragments from Azerbaijan

Open Access•L Torrisi, Valentina Venuti et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The present work is aimed at the investigation of the ceramic bulk and pigmented glazed surfaces of ancient potteries dating back to XIX century A.D. and coming from the charming archeological site located in the Medieval Agsu town (Azerbaijan), a geographic area of special interest due to the ancient commercial routes between China, Asia Minor, and Europe. For the purpose of the study, complementary investigation tools have been exploited: non-d…
