Geographic Information Systems and Cartography for a Sustainable World
This article summarizes the scope and content of the Special Issue (SI) entitled “Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Cartography for a Sustainable World” and its contribution to the global discourse regarding sustainability concerns. At the heart of the discussion in this SI lies: (i) GIS, a valuable tool and a means for modeling, designing, and analyzing (spatial) data and processes related to the pursuance of sustainability objectives at …
A Methodological Framework for Assessing Overtourism in Insular Territories—Case Study of Santorini Island, Greece
This paper aims at addressing sustainability concerns in vulnerable insular territories. Such concerns are due to the rising overtourism phenomenon that affects islands at a rapidly escalating pace and renders sustainable local development of these outstanding areas—from a natural and cultural viewpoint—at stake. Towards this end, this work capitalizes on current literature and attempts to structure a methodological framework and a respective set…
Towards a more realistic estimation of urban land take by combining cadastral parcels and building footprints
Despite its importance as a research issue, a widely accepted methodology of estimating land take resulting from urbanization has not yet been reached. Accurate geospatial datasets are currently available at a European and global level; however, different methods of quantifying urban land take could lead to diverse outputs, potentially resulting in underestimation. This can be alarming as encroaching urban sprawl is emerging as a major environmen…
Evidence-Based Exploration as the Ground for Heritage-Led Pathways in Insular Territories: Case Study Greek Islands
Global key drivers—e.g., climate change, COVID-19 outbreak—have initiated critical debates as to the sustainable future pathways of many regions around the globe. Among these fall islands, as distinct types of regions that are marked by insularity drawbacks and a mono-sectoral economic profile, grounded in mass tourism. Having as a case study area all Greek islands, this work addresses: sustainability concerns that are due to the mass tourism rep…
GIS in Architectural Teaching and Research: Planning and Heritage
Geographical Information Systems (GISs) in architecture were initially limited to regional and urban development applications. Over recent years its potential has been recognized and its use has evolved to address urban planning and architectural heritage management subjects. Nevertheless, evidence shows that its use in architecture teaching is scarce and uneven. Directive 2007/2/EC, establishing the infrastructure for spatial information in the …
Comparing the urban form of South European cities using fractal dimensions
This paper compares built-up patterns and the urban form of South European cities using fractal dimensions. Fractal dimensions (D) are estimated in two different ways: (a) using binary images with information only on the built-up and non-built-up areas and (b) using grayscale images that represent the different built-up densities. The Urban Atlas and the Imperviousness-Soil Sealing Degree datasets are used to compute fractal dimensions for the 14…
