A methodology for selecting optimal seismic risk mitigation strategies for the Italian residential masonry built heritage
Italy is one of the most seismically active countries in Europe, with a long history of destructive earthquakes that have caused significant human and economic losses. The country's extensive stock of unreinforced masonry buildings, many of which are residential and of historical value, is particularly vulnerable to seismic events. In recent decades, the Italian government has faced major costs associated with earthquake damage, highlighting the …
Seismic retrofit cost model for Italian masonry residential buildings to support territorial-scale risk analysis
Over the last 50 years, earthquakes forced the Italian Government to pay emergency, recovery and reconstruction costs amounting to 180 billion euros, i.e., about 3.6 billion euros per year. These figures underline the poor seismic resilience of Italy and therefore the need for sustainable risk mitigation plans at national level. Within this context, this study aims to provide a seismic retrofit cost model for Italian unreinforced masonry (URM) re…
Effect of retrofit interventions on seismic fragility of Italian residential masonry buildings
In this paper, the vulnerability of ordinary unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings is analyzed, and the literature related to possible seismic retrofit interventions is reviewed in order to investigate their feasibility and effectiveness. These interventions are then simulated on a database of 445 buildings through Vulnus_4.0 software, that performs simplified mechanical analyses accounting for both global and local behavior of masonry buildings. …
A Multilevel Procedure at Urban Scale to Assess the Vulnerability and the Exposure of Residential Masonry Buildings: The Case Study of Pordenone, Northeast Italy
More than the 60% of the Italian residential building stock had already been built by 1974, when seismic codes were enforced on a minimal part of the country. Unreinforced masonry buildings represent most of that share, but they are typical for each region, in terms of both materials and structural configurations. The definition of ‘regional’, i.e., more specific, vulnerability and exposure models are required to improve existing forecast models.…
