  • Linosa island

Open Access•Sara Innangi, Luciana Ferraro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

This publication presents a newly created map of the seafloor of Linosa, a volcanic island located in the Sicily Channel (Mediterranean Sea). The seafloor of Linosa was previously surveyed using geophysical and ground-truth data (in 2016 and 2017). Linosa is regarded as a "sentinel area" for alien species and worldwide environmental changes because of its geographical location, making it worthy of particular attention. The predominant habitats fo…

  • Underwater Paleotopographic and Geoarchaeological Investigations at Le Castella (Crotone, Italy)

Open Access•Salvatore Medaglia, Daniela Basso et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2024•References: 7

A submerged elevation located off the coast of Le Castella, a small village on the Ionian Coast of Calabria (Italy) populated for thousands of years that features notable archaeological remains from the Great Greece (Magna Graecia) and the Middle Ages, was investigated through in-depth, multidisciplinary, geoarchaeological research. This submarine elevation, once aligned with the marine terrace MIS 3 of Le Castella and still completely emerged be…

  • Geomorphology of coralligenous reefs offshore southeastern Sicily (Ionian Sea)

Open Access•Andrea Giulia Varzi, Luca Fallati et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

Coralligenous (C) include calcareous build-ups of biogenic origin, formed since the Holocene transgression. Peculiar columnar-shaped C outcrops were documented offshore Marzamemi village (SE Sicily, Ionian Sea), although the actual extension and distribution were not assessed. Project ‘CRESCIBLUREEF’ produced a new, 17 km2 high-resolution bathymetric map, leading to good knowledge about their extent in this area. C bioconstructions are largely di…

  • Benthic foraminifera as proxy for fossil seagrass from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Stirone River (Emilia-Romagna, Italy)

Open Access•Luca Mariani, Giovanni Coletti et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

  • Geology of Mar Piccolo, Taranto (southern Italy)

Open Access•Stefania Lisco, Cesare Corselli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

Four 1:15,000 maps for the coastal area of Mar Piccolo (Taranto, southern Italy) are presented. The study area is a small, sheltered shallow marine basin of about 20 km2, located north of Taranto town. It contains some submarine, karstic freshwater springs (citri) that have determined the development of intensive aquaculture in the past. Now, the Mar Piccolo is a highly polluted area due to the presence of both military and industrial navy docks …

  • Seafloor integrity of the Mar Piccolo Basin (Southern Italy)

Open Access•Valentina Alice Bracchi, Fabio Marchese et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

The Mar Piccolo Basin is a coastal brackish marine ecosystem located along the northern coast of the Gulf of Taranto (Southern Italy). Despite the ecological relevance of the area (Site of Community Importance IT9130004, Regional Reserve ‘Palude La Vela’ EUAP1189), the entire basin is subjected to intensive human usage. The main activities include extensive mussel farming, important industrial activities, a military harbor and densely populated s…
