  • Manipulating player numbers in small-sided soccer games

Open Access•Michael C Rumpf, Johannes Jäger et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Small-sided games (SSG) are widely used in soccer training to replicate the physiological, physical, technical, and tactical demands of competition within representative contexts. Coaches often manipulate task constraints by creating numerical superiority or inferiority, which imposes specific demands and elicits targeted adaptations. This review aimed to synthesize the effects of numerical imbalances on player performance across physiological, p…

  • Possession vs. goal scoring during small-sided games in soccer

Open Access•Michael C Rumpf, Johannes Jäger et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2026

Different task constraints such as possession play and goal scoring are regularly utilized in small-sided games (SSG) in order to train game specific situations. This narrative mini-review aimed to summarize how these two task constraints influence players' physiological, physical, technical and tactical parameters during SSG. Possession games increase the physiological load of players. Variables such as mean (+4.35%) and max heart rate (+6.43%) …

  • Injury Pathology in Young Gymnasts

    Open Access•Emma R Williams, Rhodri S Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2023

Gymnastics has a history of high injury incidence rates. However, little is known about the injury pathology in young gymnasts. The purpose of this study was to fill gaps in the literature by providing insight into the injury pathology in gymnasts aged 6 to 17 years. This study was retrospective in design, where injury data were collected using a Qualtrics questionnaire and distributed via social media. The findings revealed that the most common …

  • Relationships between Athletic Motor Skill Competencies and Maturity, Sex, Physical Performance, and Psychological Constructs in Boys and Girls

    Open Access•Ben J Pullen, Jon L Oliver et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between athletic motor skill competencies (AMSC), maturation, sex, body mass index, physical performance, and psychological constructs (motivation to exercise, physical self-efficacy, and global self-esteem). Two-hundred and twenty-four children aged 11-13 years old were included in the study and sub-divided by sex. The athlete introductory movement screen (AIMS) and tuck jump assessment …

  • Bio-banding in Sport

    Sean P Cummings, Sean P Cumming et al.•ARTICLE•Strength & Conditioning Journal•2017

BIO-BANDING IS THE PROCESS OF GROUPING ATHLETES ON THE BASIS OF ATTRIBUTES ASSOCIATED WITH GROWTH AND MATURATION RATHER THAN CHRONOLOGICAL AGE. CHILDREN OF THE SAME AGE VARY CONSIDERABLY IN BIOLOGICAL MATURATION WITH SOME INDIVIDUALS MATURING IN ADVANCE OR DELAY OF THEIR PEERS. THE TIMING OF MATURATION HAS IMPORTANT IMPLICATIONS FOR COMPETITION, TALENT IDENTIFICATION, AND TRAINING. INCREASED AWARENESS AND INTEREST IN THE SUBJECT OF MATURATION HAS…
