Texas, monuments, toward a politics of self-reckoning
In this article, I examine the efforts of a group of anti-Confederate monument activists in Williamson County, Texas. The article begins with the history of the monument itself, 100 years before the activists initiated their efforts. The intransigence to removing the Confederate monument is symbolic of white resistance to struggles for racial equality more broadly. Second, I discuss how the local legal impasse has contributed to distinct anti-mon…
Presenting unwieldy pasts
In the rich and varied work of memory studies, scholars have turned to exploring the meanings that different communities assign to the past, the social mediations of memories, as well as how the memories of subaltern subjects re-signify the relationship between history and memory. This special issue explores the ever present dynamics of unwieldy pasts through what have been termed “the spectral turn” and “the forensic turn.” We argue that specter…
Haunting and thinking from the Utopian margins: Conversation with Avery Gordon
Avery Gordon’s work exceeds the limits of disciplinary boundaries and so does her practice. She uses the term ‘itinerant’ to describe her strategies of inhabiting multidisciplinary spaces and of critiquing the worlds, peripheries and fractures produced by racial capitalism. Gordon moves as an intellectual itinerant, creating multidirectional and interdisciplinary dialogues as a sociology scholar at the University of California, Santa Barbara, whi…

Teaching the Politics of Encounter
This article focuses on encounters within spaces of traumatic memory in Chile and considers how outsiders, primarily college students, engage with narrators in these sites. The article explores the concept of empathic unsettlement, including how and whether empathic unsettlement lasts and how it moves with people. Empathic unsettlement is that middle ground between engagement and disruption, a dynamic between the narrator and the listener, that j…
Empathic unsettlement and the outsider within Argentine spaces of memory
In quite distinctive ways, protagonists of Argentine spaces of memory have addressed the complex questions of whether and how visitors experience empathy and empathic unsettlement in these spaces. I will draw from my recent experiences as co-professor with Marita Sturken of a group of US students in Buenos Aires. I will suggest that tension-ridden engagement between outsiders and insiders, including our exchanges with Argentine guides in three ic…
The Politics of Memory in Chile: From Pinochet to Bachelet
Explores how, and with what effect, the politics of memory in Chile have evolved in the decades since the end of the repressive Pinochet regime
Sustaining Human Rights in the Twenty-First Century
Memorial Fragments, Monumental Silences and Reawakenings in 21st-Century Chile
This article analyses the commemoration of political violence and its victims in the aftermath of the Chilean dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1973—90). We assess the varied political processes involved in commemoration, and we identify those whose struggles to reclaim sites and spaces associated with past human rights violations represent a new political, and in some cases antipolitical, repertoire. We also examine shifts in official st…

Resurrecting Allende

The Formation and Transformation of Political Identity: Leaders of the Chilean Left, 1968-1990
Based on a study of the 1960s generation of Chilean left-wing leaders, this article offers a three-dimensional model of individual political identity to examine how leaders justify their contributions to society and the political programmes of which they are a part. The central dimension of individual political identity is that of cognitive frameworks, that is, individuals' fundamental approaches to politics, rooted in the values they assign to i…
