The wonders of friendship
The notion of close friends being able to endure prolonged spatial and temporal separation and still feel as if no time has passed is a well-known trope. In this article, we explore such ‘wonders’ of friendship that escape linear and sequential expectations. Weaving together critical friendship studies and affect theory, we extend recent work on friendship temporalities, which has often adopted representational modes of analysis. Focusing on mome…
Searching for (meanings of) rest
As a scholar and a feminist, I find myself fascinated, bewildered, and frustrated by rest on conceptual, empirical, and personal levels. In this Open Forum text, based on a project investigating rest practices as well as articulations of rest and their significance in contemporary Sweden, I draw upon existing research to identify meanings of rest. I discuss the multifacetedness and elusiveness of rest on conceptual levels and as lived experience,…
Play the Man, Not the Cards. (Homo)socialities and Masculine Positions in Poker
Poker, a million-dollar industry and a leisure activity, is played between close-knit friends, at casinos, and online. It is gendered; masculine positions are produced between players, often in competitive, aggressive, and sexist ways. However, the (homo)social relationships of poker have hardly been studied. Using interviews with Swedish men poker players, this article investigates masculine positions and homosocialities within poker, demonstrat…
Masculinity as buzzword
Ethics in critical studies of men and masculinities
Outbursts, Discipline, and Wake-Up Calls
Within gambling debates and research, emotions are associated with irrationality, loss of control, and problem gambling. Simultaneously, they have a complex relationship to masculine positions, which are said to be connected to both stoicism and aggressivity. Using interviews with Swedish men gamblers and feminist and critical theorisations of emotions, this article discusses experiences, negotiations, and performances of emotions within men's ga…
Feel the suspense! masculine positions and emotional interpellations in Swedish sports betting commercials
Gambling advertising is often permeated by stereotypical portrayals of gender, including those of male gamblers as tough and successful. Simultaneously, representations of men in other advertising has become increasingly diverse, including emotional and sexualized, heroic and muscular portrayals. This article uses both these bodies of research to discuss Swedish sports betting commercials from 2019–2020. It shows that different commercials draw o…
Feeling rules and sexualities
Postfeminist cultural representations have shown men as bumbling anti-heroes, and as sensitive and supportive of feminism. Research on postfeminist men has mainly been based on UK and US cultural representations, while other contexts have received little attention. In this article, I deepen the understanding of postfeminist portrayals of men by focussing on Sweden and on formulations of men’s emotionality and sexuality. I also develop the idea of…
Selling Swedish Fathers
Fatherhood ideals have been changing over the last decades, and Sweden has often been seen as a fore-runner when it comes to both fatherhood policies and gender equality. In this article, we investigate how discourses about engaged, Swedish fathers and various formulations of gender equality are linked to and used in the discursive production of Sweden as a nation. We use three communication campaigns launched by the Swedish Institute (a governme…
Walk the Talk
This article explores two Swedish TV shows centred on close, emotional friendships between men, Våra vänners liv (2010) [Our friends' lives] and Boys (2015), as examples of postfeminism with a Swedish twist, inspired by Swedish ideologies of gender equality. Explicitly referring to feminism and gender equality, both shows explore what can be considered progressive masculine positions, drawing on ideas about sincerity, authenticity, emotionality a…
Be Soft
Gambling advertising usually draws heavily on gendered stereotypes, including portrayals of male gamblers as tough and successful. Meanwhile, representations of men in advertising have grown increasingly diverse, with emotional and sexualized men accompanying heroic, muscular portrayals. In this article, both these bodies of research are drawn upon to discuss a series of Swedish sports betting commercials which encourage the viewer to 'bet hard' …
Riktiga vänner och andra män
Feminist researchers have an ambivalent relation to friendships between men. They have been seen as both threatening and promising, as relationships in which gendered power relations can be either reproduced or challenged. This article draws upon interviews with heterosexual men about their friendships with other men, and the role of emotional and physical closeness in these friendships. The interviewees distinguish between “real” and less real f…
