  • Shaping Imperial Youth

Open Access•Antonin Dubois, Sara Legrandjacque et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social History•2026

This article analyses the existence of an imperial youth in late-nineteenth-century France through the study of an association created for and by French young men in 1897, the Ligue coloniale de la jeunesse. Thanks to a thorough examination of a booklet edited by the Ligue comprising the names and information of 288 members, combined with other archival sources, it aims at writing a social history of the French imperial youth. In order to retrace…

    Open Access•Sara Legrandjacque•ARTICLE•Moussons•2025

This paper discusses the year 1905 as an educational watershed in colonial Vietnam. It focuses on the development of student mobility that transcended colonial and imperial boundaries and gave new momentum to educational training on a transnational scale. In the mid-1900s, the anti-colonial mandarin Phan Bội Châu launched a new nationalist movement called Đông Du , meaning ‘Going East.’ It centred on sending young men to Japan via Hong Kong to tr…

    Sara Legrandjacque•ARTICLE•Outre-mers•2017•Cited by: 3
