From Post-War to Early Anthropocene
Anti-Apocalyptic Optimism
This article discusses Carla Benedetti's influential critique of eschatological climate fatalism, which is centered on two religious concepts, "apocalypse" and "prophecy." These concepts are described by Benedetti as contrasting cognitive and affective orientations. I compare Benedetti's approach with the work of philosopher Déborah Danowski and anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, and with the ideas of theologians Catherine Keller, Judith …
Speculazioni ecologiche

Species at War? The Animal and the Anthropocene
Environmental politics has become inextricably entwined with planetary deep time. This article calls for a reconceptualization of the relation between humans and nonhuman nature. It rejects the ontological singularity of the human, either as a biological species (Homo) or as a planetary super-agent (Anthropos) and argues for a perspective centred on companionship and shared vulnerability. Animal philosophy serves here to counter a growing tendenc…
Italian Studies
Our article maps the increasing prominence of interartistic and intermedial methodologies in modern and contemporary Italy, and advocates the advantages of an interdisciplinary approach for Italian Studies. We map some current trends in cultural, visual and comparative studies and explore the influence of these fields on the development of Italian Studies. We suggest that the future of our discipline is best understood in terms of an ‘interdiscip…
Naturalizing Apocalypse
Expectations of a dystopian or apocalyptic future are central to twentieth and twenty-first century culture, and constitute a pervasive influence on popular culture, religious identity, and political ideology. Political scientists, philosophers and literary critics have emphasized the Manichean worldview that underlies present-day concerns with the future: a desire to cast historical events in terms of a struggle between light and darkness, good …

Writing Like Music
(The poems of the lyrist can express nothing that did not already lie hidden in that vast universality and absoluteness of the music that compelled him to figurative speech. Langua…
