  • Health aid displacement during a decade of conflict (2011–19) in Syria

Open Access•Munzer Alkhalil, Maher Alaref et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

This study highlights that in very complex conflict-affected contexts such as Syria, it is difficult to suggest the use of health aid displacement as an effective tool for aid-effectiveness for donors as it does not reflect domestic needs and priorities. Yet there seems to be evidence of slight displacement for individual donors. However, we can suggest that donors vastly prefer to focus their investment in the humanitarian sector rather than the…

  • A missing piece in the Health for Peace agenda

Open Access•Kristen Meagher, Hala Mkhallalati et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

The purpose of this paper is to explore how gender diverse leadership and governance of health systems may contribute to the Health for Peace Agenda. Despite recent momentum, the evidence base to support, implement and evaluate ‘Health for Peace’ programmes remains limited and policy-makers in conflict settings do not consider peace when developing and implementing interventions and health policies. Through this analysis, we found that gender div…

  • Community engagement in health systems interventions and research in conflict-affected countries

    Open Access•Anna Durrance-Bagale, M Marzouk et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2022

BACKGROUND: Healthcare research, planning, and delivery with minimal community engagement can result in financial wastage, failure to meet objectives, and frustration in the communities that programmes are designed to help. Engaging communities - individual service-users and user groups - in the planning, delivery, and assessment of healthcare initiatives from inception promotes transparency, accountability, and 'ownership'. Health systems affect…

  • An analysis of humanitarian and health aid alignment over a decade (2011–2019) of the Syrian conflict

Open Access•Munzer Alkhalil, Maher Alaref et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2022

In light of the dreadful humanitarian crisis in Syria, there has been an adverse aid alignment. Considering the chronicity of the conflict, there is an urgent need to improve aid alignment through more investment in local planning at district or governorate levels. This is especially important to navigate through conflict sensitivities while responding to local needs and initiating local developments. These approaches, combined with adopting heal…

  • Whose voices should shape global health education? Curriculum codesign and codelivery by people with direct expertise and lived experience

Open Access•Mariam Sbaiti, Mike J Streule et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

There are contrasting opinions of what global health (GH) curricula should contain and limited discussion on whose voices should shape it. In GH education, those with first-hand expertise of living and working in the contexts discussed in GH classrooms are often absent when designing curricula. To address this, we developed a new model of curriculum codesign called Virtual Roundtable for Collaborative Education Design (ViRCoED). This paper descri…

  • Ten years of war! You expect people to fear a ‘germ’?”

Open Access•Yazan Douedari, Mervat Alhaffar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This study is the first to explore perspectives and lived experiences of internally-displaced Syrians in the weeks prior to the COVID-19 epidemic in Northwest Syria. The challenging living conditions of internally-displaced people in Syria are further threatened by the spread of COVID-19. Tailored control measures are urgently needed to reduce COVID-19 transmission in camps
