Household water security and infant feeding practices in Mexico: Insights from the Ensanut 2021 survey
These findings highlight the complex role of WS in IYCF. While WS improves MDD and MMF, it may also influence breastfeeding patterns, particularly in urban areas where formula feeding is more common. Ensuring equitable access to safe water should be a priority, alongside strategies that promote and protect breastfeeding in different socioeconomic contexts
Household water security is a mediator of household food security in a nationally representative sample of Mexico
Objective: Explore the relationship between water insecurity (WI) and food security and their covariates in Mexican households. Design: A cross-sectional study with nationally representative data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey-Continuous 2021 (in Spanish, ENSANUT-Continua 2021), collected data from 12 619 households. Setting: WI was measured using the Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) Scale in Spanish and adapted to th…
Food Insecurity is Associated with Low Dietary Diversity in Rural Women in Mexico: Results from the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey, Ensanut 2018
Rural women suffer greater vulnerability to food insecurity (FI) compared to their urban or male counterparts. We analyzed the association between food security (FS) status and dietary diversity (DD) in rural women through data from the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT) 2018 from 2,099 rural women. DD was measured using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. FS was measured using the Latin America and Caribbean Foo…
Food insecurity and coping strategies in international migrants in transit through Mexico
This study provides a comprehensive assessment of FI in a mobile population using a standard international measure. Results confirm widespread and severe FI, highlighting a potential humanitarian crisis requiring both national and international attention. Further research is critical to inform strategies for guaranteeing the right to food access for migrants in transit through third (non-destination) countries
Dietary quality and household food insecurity among Mexican children and adolescents
Seventy percent of Mexican households experience some level of food insecurity (FI). Studies have shown positive associations between FI and poor dietary quality. As far as it is known, this is the first time the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2010) has been used to assess dietary quality of children and adolescents in Mexico, and to examine if FI is related to it. The objective of this research is to assess dietary quality and its association with FI…
Household food insecurity in Mexico is associated with the co‐occurrence of overweight and anemia among women of reproductive age, but not female adolescents
We aimed to determine the association between household food insecurity (HFI) and the co-occurrence of overweight and anemia among women of reproductive age in the Mexican population. We analyzed data on 4,039 nonpregnant female adolescents (15-19 years) and 10,760 nonpregnant adult women of reproductive age (20-49 years) from the 2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey of Mexico. The survey uses a two-stage sampling design, stratified by rural…
Dietary quality indices vary with sociodemographic variables and anthropometric status among Mexican adults: A cross-sectional study. Results from the 2006 National Health and Nutrition Survey
Objective To evaluate the dietary quality of Mexican adults’ diet, we constructed three dietary quality indices: a cardioprotective index (CPI), a micronutrient adequacy index (MAI) and a dietary diversity index (DDI). Design Data were derived from the 2006 National Health and Nutrition Survey, which is a national survey representative of the Mexican population with a stratified, multistage, probabilistic sample design. Dietary intake was assesse…
