  • Health research prioritization in Somalia

Open Access•Steven Ssendagire, Said Aden Mohamoud et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction: Despite recognition that health research is an imperative to progress toward universal health coverage, resources for health research are limited. Yet, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, more than 85% of the resources available for health research are spent on answering less relevant research questions. This misalignment is partially due to absence of locally determined health research priorities. In this study, we identified health …

  • Drought, armed conflict and population mortality in Somalia, 2014–2018

Open Access•Abdihamid Warsame, Severine Frison et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

During 2010–2012, extreme food insecurity and famine in Somalia were estimated to account for 256,000 deaths. Since 2014 Somalia has experienced recurrent below-average rainfall, with consecutive failed rains in late 2016 and 2017 leading to large-scale drought, displacement and epidemics. We wished to estimate mortality across Somalia from 2014 to 2018, and measure the excess death toll attributable to the 2017–2018 drought-triggered crisis. We …

  • Evaluating Covid-19 decision-making in a humanitarian setting

Open Access•Abdihamid Warsame, Mohamed M Fuje et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

The global COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented in its scope and impact. While a great deal of research has been directed towards the response in high-income countries, relatively little is known about the way in which decision-makers in low-income and crisis-affected countries have contended with the epidemic. Through use of an a priori decision framework, we aimed to evaluate the process of policy and operational decision-making in relation to th…

  • Exploring the temporal patterns and crisis-related risk factors for population displacement in Somalia (2016-2018)

Open Access•Aidan Yuen, Abdihamid Warsame et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2022•Citada por: 1

This study identified temporal, and socially and biologically plausible associations between key crisis-related risk factors and displacement in Somalia. The findings suggest a sequence of events spanning a few months, where failed rains and consequent food insecurity likely prompted early population out-migration to larger urban centers where humanitarian services were more accessible. The presence of therapeutics-based food security services co…

  • Towards systematic evaluation of epidemic responses during humanitarian crises

Open Access•Abdihamid Warsame, Karl Blanchet et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

Epidemics continue to pose a significant public health threat to populations in low and middle-income countries. However, little is known about the appropriateness and performance of response interventions in such settings. We undertook a rapid scoping review of public health evaluation frameworks for emergency settings in order to judge their suitability for assessing epidemic response. Our search identified a large variety of frameworks. Howeve…

  • Covid-19 control in low-income settings and displaced populations

Open Access•Maysoon Dahab, Kevin van Zandvoort et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2020

COVID-19 prevention strategies in resource limited settings, modelled on the earlier response in high income countries, have thus far focused on draconian containment strategies, which impose movement restrictions on a wide scale. These restrictions are unlikely to prevent cases from surging well beyond existing hospitalisation capacity; not withstanding their likely severe social and economic costs in the long term. We suggest that in low-income…

  • The role of public health information in assistance to populations living in opposition and contested areas of Syria, 2012–2014

Open Access•Emma Diggle, Wilhelmina Welsch et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2017

More investment in data collection and use, technological investment in the use of M- and E-health, capacity building and strong technical and independent leadership should be a key priority for the humanitarian health response in Syria and other emergencies. Much more attention should be also given for the treatment gap for non-communicable diseases including mental disorders
