Oikeutta voidaan lähestyä monesta eri näkökulmasta. Laki ja lainkäyttö ovat vallankäyttöä, mutta yleisempi yhteiskunnallinen vallankäyttö on myös oikeudellinen ilmiö. Tällöin oikeutta, lakia ja sen käyttöä yhteiskunnan osana voidaan tarkastella niin politiikan tutkimuksen kuin oikeustieteenkin puitteissa.
