Para apoiar essa conclusão, o ensaio examina a pesquisa acadêmica existente e, em seguida, ilustra como o foco em detalhes sensoriais em uma entrevista de história oral pode fornecer novos insights sobre histórias …

    Elizabeth Schwall•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2023

Before and after the Mexican Revolution that began in 1910, political leaders and intellectuals obsessed over modernity and nationalism. Mexico must join the cabal of modern nations, they determined, and on its own terms—distinguished by rich Indigenous histories and festive cultures. Scholars have shown how the visual and literary arts contributed to this project, and Manuel Cuellar shows how dance and movement helped to formulate lo mexicano (M…

  • Contamination in Cuban Modern Dance Histories

    Open Access•Elizabeth Schwall•ARTICLE•Dance Research Journal•2022

This article examines how and why Cuban modern dancers and their scholars cite several white US dancers as forebearers in their nationalistic, anti-imperialistic, and anti-racist dance tradition. I use “contamination” to analyze this complicated topic, which threatens to unfairly center US dancers at Cubans’ expense or to romantically caricature Cubans defying US imperialism with a nationalist hybrid. Multidirectional, indeterminate contamination…

Comprised of an introduction and 11 essays, this edited volume examines musical representations of national and ethnic identities in Latin America. Editor William Beezley introduces the text by promising to focus on “especially operatic compositions, some with indigenous themes, and the rise of national cultural identity in Latin America” (p. 1). Several of the essays, including two by Beezley, have this priority, yet seven authors make limited o…

  • A Spectacular Embrace

    Elizabeth Schwall•ARTICLE•Dance Chronicle•2018

This article examines dance dialogues between Cuba and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, focusing mostly on ballet, with some analysis of folkloric dance. Cuban and Soviet dancers enacted what I call a spectacular embrace, a choreographed relationship that obscured tensions, exaggerated affections, and allowed Cuban dancers to celebrate socialist solidarities while reaffirming national distinctions. This dancing history provides new insights …

During this period, Mexican modern dancers worked in Cuba, and Cuban ballet dancers in Mexico. Over years of close, visceral encounters, Mexican and Cuban dancers built cultural institutions and international relationships filled with emotional ups and downs. Focusing on the sentiments that guided dancing revolutionaries, this article examine…
