Sea Notorio”: Testamentary Autobiographies of Africans and the Archives on Slavery and Emancipation in Argentina
This article proposes expanding the definition of autobiography to include testaments dictated by Africans to notaries in Buenos Aires between 1810 and 1853. Drawing on theorizations of mediation as inherent to subaltern writing, I analyze approximately 150 testaments as a precious corpus of slave narratives, illuminating African origins and memories, strategies of family reconstruction through marriage and godparentage, networks of mutual aid an…

Yesenia Barragan. Freedom’s Captives: Slavery and Gradual Emancipation on the Colombian Black Pacific
Over the past decade, an increasing number of scholars from North American institutions have sought to expand historical understanding of the process of abolition in Spanish America. Yesenia Barragan’s book analyzing the case of the Colombian Black Pacific is a major contribution to this scholarship. It draws on the rich tradition of Colombian history and the Colombian Pacific, offering a comprehensive analysis that emphasizes the gradualness of …
Black Legend: The Many Lives of Raúl Grigera and the Power of Racial Storytelling in Argentina
Stories and stereotypes play a key role in dehumanization, argues David Livingstone Smith, and Paulina Alberto's beautiful book absolutely proves it. It deconstructs the legend of an allegedly orphaned and broken character from early twentieth-century Argentina, “el negro Raúl,” and restores the biography of Raúl Grigera, a member of a rich Afroporteño community and a worthy builder of his own celebrity. That celebrity was neither easy nor free. …

Free Womb Law, Legal Asynchronies, and Migrations: Suing for an Enslaved Woman's Child in Nineteenth-Century Río de la Plata
This article analyzes in depth the history of Petrona, an enslaved woman sold in Santa Fe (Argentina), sent to Buenos Aires and later possibly to Montevideo (Uruguay). By reconstructing her case, the article demonstrates how the legal status of enslaved persons was affected by the redefinitions of jurisdictions and by the forced or voluntary crossings between political units. This study also shows the circulation and uses of the Free Womb law in …

This book by Leandro Losada associates him with a new spirit pervading Argentine historiography, one that revises the traditional portrayal of the elites who had a leading role in and benefited from the “conservative order.” Losada shows the heterogeneous composition of high society, made up of families with different trajectories and historical or even regional origins, and reveals its sociocultural transformations. After pointing out that Bueno…
British Merchants in Nineteenth-Century Brazil: Business, Culture, and Identity in Bahia, 1808-1850
In this book, Louise H. Guenther examines, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the process of constructing Great Britain’s economic and political hegemony over Brazil in the nineteenth century. The author’s case-study approach focuses on social relationships “on the ground”; in doing this, she seeks to restore the uncertainties experienced by the main agents of British imperialism. British merchants’ lives in Bahia between 1808 and 1850 were n…
