Scaling home designs for healthy cognitive ageing: A realist evaluation perspective
We present an empirically grounded theory of change (ToC) to support delivery at scale of home design for healthy cognitive ageing. Using a realist evaluation lens, we analyse how contexts, mechanisms, and outcomes (CMO) identified in the ‘Designing homes for healthy cognitive ageing’ (DesHCA) research shape scalability. Design principles and features were co-produced with older adults and housing professionals through VR-supported workshops, and…
Othering Older People’s Housing: Gaming Ageing to Support Future-Planning
The 'othering' of ageing is linked to an integrated process of ageism and hinders planning for the future for both individuals and practitioners delivering housing and health services. This paper aims to explore how creative interventions can help personalise, exchange knowledge and lead to system changes that tackle the 'othering' of ageing. The Designing Homes for Healthy Cognitive Ageing (DesHCA) project offers new and creative insights throug…
Housing Design Evaluation Research for People Living with Cognitive Change: A Systematic Literature Review
Research suggests that improvements to home design may enable us to live better with cognitive change as we age. However, few innovations have been fully evaluated. The paper systematically reviews 47 items of evaluative literature. Research design and quality are varied. Qualitative analysis of literature demonstrates the need for a holistic approach that includes older people’s diverse perspectives, examples of promising practice that responds …
Comparative Analysis of 20-Minute Neighbourhood Policies and Practices in Melbourne and Scotland
Twenty-minute neighbourhoods highlight the importance of well-connected and mixed-used neighbourhoods and communities with proximate access to employment, essential services, public transport, and open spaces. Shorter distances together with re-prioritised public spaces encourage more active transport choices, resulting in public health benefits and reduced environmental pollution. Higher liveability brought about by mixed-use developments enable…
