Introduction: Enterprise and Society at Twenty-Five
Marking Enterprise and Society ’s 25th anniversary, we present three short, interlinked pieces, written by the journal’s four editors and outlining its origins and subsequent trajectory. It is hoped they will give readers old and new some sense of the history that has shaped the journal as it is today
But to cover her shame: ’ Respectability, Social Mobility, and the Middling Sort in Early Nineteenth-century England
This article explores how one middling English family – the Wilkinsons, shopkeepers in industrialising Lancashire – experienced and negotiated threats to their respectability and social status during the early nineteenth-century. It contributes to the history of downward social mobility, responding to a recent call in this journal for more work on this topic. I use a rich epistolary archive to explore the Wilkinsons experiences

We begin by examining the intellectual origins of the approach and by defining why and how it matters to the study of management and organizations. Specifically, we emphasize the performative role of history in making and unmaking organizational …
Industrial heritage, capitalism and business
Writing business history: Creating narratives
In this article we examine business history’s relationship to narrative history writing. In so doing we respond to the Call for Paper’s question: ‘storytelling vs business history: do business historians create narratives and in what ways?’ We survey attitudes in business history to narrative history writing, the relationship between archive, narrative, and historical knowledge claims, and the importance of writing practices and qualities. We rep…

Practically the Uniform of the Tribe”: Dress Codes Among Commercial Travelers
“Our outer dress does inner work for us, and if clothes “mean”, it is in the first place to ourselves, telling us we are or may be something we have meant to be” What is it to wear a uniform? Some occupations involve enforced adoption of a uniform, the police and armed services most obviously. Yet other occupations—such as management consultants—adopt styles or codes of dress that, while not enforced, have a currency and coherence such that we mi…
