Archaeometric analysis of the metal ornamentation of Late Bronze Age vessels and funnel-shaped pendants from the south-western Transdanubia
Vessels decorated with domed metal discs were extraordinarily rare and valuable commodities of the Late Bronze Age. Pottery adorned with bronze discs and tin first appeared in Hungary during the earlier Urnfield period (14th/13th century BC). A vessel adorned with three ring motifs inlaid with a high-tin alloy on its belly is known from Nagykanizsa-Bilkei-dűlő and a cup decorated with bronze domed discs was recovered from Grave 222 of the Vörs-Ba…
The warrior aristocracy of the Late Bronze Age Urnfield Period in County Somogy, south-western Transdanubia. The Lengyeltóti V hoard (County Somogy/Hungary)
Discussed here is the presence of a warrior aristocracy in south-western Hungary, principally in County Somogy, during the early (and middle) Urnfield period (Br D–Ha A1-A2) based on the archaeological record. The period's offensive and protective weapons wielded by the warrior aristocracy during the Urnfield period (mid-thirteenth to ninth century BC) are exclusively known from hoards in this region; none have been recovered from burials. The Le…
A bronze hoard from Pusztasárkánytó (Mosdós-Sárkánytó puszta) and a grave assemblage from Ráksi (County Somogy) in the Piarist Museum in Budapest
In 1917, the Piarist gymnasium in Budapest (currently the Piarist Museum) acquired two important Middle Bronze Age assemblages: a hoard of the Transdanubian Encrusted Pottery culture from Pusztasárkánytó (Mosdós-Sárkánytó-puszta) (RB A2b-c) and what was probably a grave assemblage of the Koszider period from Ráksi (RB B1). Neither of these two finds has yet been fully published; J. Hampel only presented a typological selection of the finds. Archa…
A new greave from the Late Bronze Age hoard found at Lengyeltóti in southern Transdanubia
The hoard V from Lengyeltóti (County Somogy) contained over seven hundred artefacts, most of which can be dated to the Kurd horizon (Ha A1), although there are a few articles that can be assigned to the Gyermely horizon (Ha A2). One of the most remarkable pieces in the hoard is a greave decorated with wheel-shaped motifs. Greaves were part of the typical defensive weaponry of the Ha A1 period in southern Transdanubia
Der spätbronzezeitliche zweiteilige bronzebrustpanzer aus der Donau in Ungarn
The Szent István Király Museum of Székesfehérvár bought the cuirass, which had been found in the Danube near Pilismarót, from a private collector in 1982. The breast and back plates of the cuirass were built of bronze plates. The complete cuirass is a unique item and it belongs to the group of cuirasses found in the Danube region [Èaka (Cseke), Ducové (Ducó), Èierna nad Tisou (Ágcsernyő), Nadap, Pázmándfalu]. An intact armour was found in grave 1…

Spätbronzezeitliches Gräberfeld von Sárbogárd-Tringer-Tanya (Komitat Fejér) in Ost-Transdanubien
The Late Bronze Age cemetery of Sárbogárd-Tringer-tanya is located in the northern part of the town of Sárbogárd in Central Hungary. This cemetery detail with 13 pits of relocated cremation burials were discovered during a rescue excavation in 1960. Based on their pottery and bronze grave goods, these burials have been dated to the Bz C2-D1 and Bz D2-Ha A1 periods. While in graves belonging to the early phase of the cemetery, forms and decoration…
