  • Making Manly Men’

Jialin Christina Wu•ARTICLE•The Journal of Imperial &…•2024•References: 3

In British Malaya, Scouting promoted the virtues of the Great Outdoors and opened up space for alternative views of boyhood for indigenous boys. Although Malayan boys were no strangers to being out-of-doors prior to the movement's introduction, Scouting established an educational framework in which outdoor learning gained traction and where the Great Outdoors came to be identified as an ideal environment for cultivating a wholesome, active, and h…

  • The Four-Equation New Keynesian Model

Eric Sims, Jialin Christina Wu et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2023

This paper develops a New Keynesian model featuring financial intermediation, short- and long-term bonds, credit shocks, and scope for unconventional monetary policy. The log-linearized model reduces to four equations: Phillips and IS curves, as well as policy rules for the short-term interest rate and the central bank's long-bond portfolio (QE). Credit shocks and QE appear in both the IS and Phillips curves. In equilibrium, optimal monetary poli…

  • Negative interest rate policy and the yield curve

Open Access•Jialin Christina Wu, Jing Cynthia Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2020

We evaluate the implications of the ECB's negative interest rate policy (NIRP) on the yield curve. To capture various shapes of the short end of the yield curve induced by the NIRP, we introduce two policy indicators, which summarize the immediate and longer horizon future monetary policy stances. We find that the four NIRP events lowered the short‐term interest rate by the same amount. The impact is dampened at longer maturities for the first tw…

  • Cette fraternité merveilleuse

    Jialin Christina Wu•ARTICLE•Le Mouvement social•2019•References: 1

  • Measuring the Macroeconomic Impact of Monetary Policy at the Zero Lower Bound

Open Access•Jialin Christina Wu, Jing Cynthia Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of money credit and banking•2016

This paper employs an approximation that makes a nonlinear term structure model extremely tractable for analysis of an economy operating near the zero lower bound for interest rates. We show that such a model offers an excellent description of the data compared to the benchmark model and can be used to summarize the macroeconomic effects of unconventional monetary policy. Our estimates imply that the efforts by the Federal Reserve to stimulate th…

  • A Life of Make‐Believe’

    Open Access•Jialin Christina Wu•ARTICLE•Gender & History•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 1

According to white Scoutmasters in Malaya, ‘the peculiar difficulties of locality and climate’ necessitated certain proscriptions on Scout training for Malayans. Restrictions on the physical aspects of Scouting in Malayan jungles limited opportunities for Malayans to cultivate Scouting's idealised male figure of the frontiersman. At the same time, colonial discouragement of the ‘Anglicisation’ of indigenous Scouts effectively curtailed indigenous…

  • “First Unto God and then to the Queen”

Jialin Christina Wu, Christina Wu•ARTICLE•Études canadiennes / Canadian…•2013

  • Correcting Estimation Bias in Dynamic Term Structure Models

Michael D Bauer, Glenn D Rudebusch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2012

The affine dynamic term structure model (DTSM) is the canonical empirical finance representation of the yield curve. However, the possibility that DTSM estimates may be distorted by small-sample bias has been largely ignored. We show that conventional estimates of DTSMcoefficients are indeed severely biased, andthis bias results in misleading estimates of expected future short-term interest rates and of long-maturity term premia. We provide a var…

  • Monetary and Fiscal Stimuli, Ownership Structure, and China's Housing Market

Yongheng Deng, Randall Morck et al.•REPORT•2011•Cited by: 12•References: 3

In the recent financial crisis, macroeconomic stimuli produced mixed results across developed economies. In contrast, China's stimulus boosted real GDP growth from an annualized 6.2% in the first quarter of 2009 trough to 11.9% in the first quarter of 2010.Amidst this phenomenal response, land auction and house prices in major cities soared. We argue that the speed and efficacy of China's stimulus derives from state control over its banking system …
