  • Franca Viola’s story (re)told on paper and screen: Challenging patriarchy and mafia culture

    Open Access•Claudia Bernardi, Adalgisa Giorgio•ARTICLE•Modern Italy•2026

In 1965, Franca Viola said ‘no’ to a reparatory marriage. Her decision to take her mafioso rapist to court had important consequences for Italian legal history and Italian women’s history, leading to the abolition, in 1981, of article 544 of the penal code which extinguished the crime of sexual violence with the matrimonio riparatore . Her case has inspired numerous books, plays and films over the years, which have exploited its potential for ima…

Taking a narrative approach and applying thematic analysis, this paper explores interviews with forty-four Māori Italians, conducted in New Zealand in 2013. We show how Māori Italians negotiate the challenge of constructing posit…

    Adalgisa Giorgio•ARTICLE•Italian Studies•2011

Can an 'exceptional woman' of the past be a model for contemporary women and the subject of analysis of a gendered historiography? What were the norms which regulated the life of an exceptional woman such as Eleonora de Fonseca Pimentel (1752–1799)? How do the social, political, and cultural context and the ideological circumstances of those who write about her affect their representations? This article examines three texts on this historical fig…

  • Nature vs Culture: Repression, Rebellion and Madness in Elsa Morante's Aracoeli

    Adalgisa Giorgio•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1994•Cited by: 1

In a recent volume on Italian women writers, two consecutive articles appear putting forward two diametrically opposed views of Elsa Morante's treatment of motherhood. Marise Jeuland-Meynaud claims that Morante upholds an essentialist view of women, who are reduced in her novels to instinct, irrationality and to the sole function of procreation.' Her work would thus endorse the nature/ culture opposition-one of the binary oppositions around which…

Fabrizia Ramondino (1936) is a writer whose prose conjures up a magical and mesmerizing world, which she scrutinizes in every detail and describes with a respect for authenticity which never falters. Whichever of her books we open, we are transported in the course of the first few sentences into a world which dazzles us by the precision with which it has been drawn. By the time we finish the book, we feel enriched and satisfied, but also resentfu…
