  • Éffondrements: Frédéric Beigbeder’s Windows on the World

    Open Access•Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•French Cultural Studies•2010

Frédéric Beigbeder’s Windows on the World uses the fictional conceit of a narrator telling events post mortem in order to describe what happened on 11 September 2001. In doing so, he approaches the events using what is culturally known, and attempts to develop a new episteme for these events by means of the known, in distinction to those who might penetrate the Lacanian Real and those recounting the events from an apocalyptic point of view

    Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2008•Cited by: 1

The French warning system against possible acts of terror, called Vigipirate, is a color-coded plan for raising awareness of the citizenry of France and a program of precautionary activities and policies. Each of the four stages of the alert-yellow, orange, red, and scarlet-offers increased security but also brings into question enduring values in Republican France, including the sovereignty and freedom of each individual, his or her independence…

Reviewed by: The Triangle of Representation Lawrence R. Schehr Prendergast, Christopher. The Triangle of Representation. New York: Columbia University Press, 2000. Pp. 123. The phenomenon of French theory began as a heady import to the English-speaking world in the late sixties. Produced originally at a moment at which the political stakes were very high—the war in Vietnam, mai 68, the free speech movement, various movements of liberation and dec…

  • The Last Straw

    Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•SubStance•2004

Here are four ways to start an article. One is to take a keyword and look it up in a dictionary. By engaging its meaning, especially its denotative meaning, the critic can pinpoint a moment and a nexus within a system. Scrutinizing its connotations, its changes over time, or its multiple, if not contradictory meanings, the critic can begin to destabilize that point, not necessarily to deconstruct it, as things would have been said in the seventie…

might first evoke figures of libertine executioners, the cruel despots of the Marquis's tales (Saint-Fond, Noirceuil, Blangis, Brisa-Testa) or figures of massacring courtesans (Juliette, Clairwil, Olympe, Mme Durand). Such a conjunction might also evoke the extraordinary meeting between a man and a historic moment, between a writing and an event: Sade left the Bastille on 4 July 1789 because of the riot, later became an active militant of the Rev…

  • Mirbeau's Ultraviolence

    Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•SubStance•1998

SET IN A MYTHICAL CHINA, Octave Mirbeau's 1899 novel Jardin des supplices is a sustained narrative in which scenes of bloody torture are set against a story of a decadent love affair between the narrator and the female protagonist, Clara. The novel is divided into three sections, of which the first is a frontispiece, consisting in the main of reworked material from Divagations sur le meurtre (1896) and loi du meurtre (1892). The frontispiece is a…

  • Proust's Musical Inversions

    Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1982

In his fascinating reading of Flaubert's novels Proust emerges as a perceptive critic, a rival novelist, and an anxious heir to the master's mantle. In the collection known as Contre Sainte-Beuve, Proust demonstrates acute critical powers in his discussions of Balzac, Baudelaire, and Nerval; in various shorter essays and articles, there are perceptive, if often fragmentary, insights into the work of Dostoevsky, Goethe, Stendhal, and Flaubert. If …

  • King Lear: Monstrous Mimesis

    Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•SubStance•1982

How does one read King Lear? We as readers often lull ourselves into a sense of false understanding: we take it to be such a great and powerful work, whose profundity is so real and true, and hence, immediate, that we fail to question it. The work communicates despite its opacity; the reader resolves the difficulties of the play into simple, if not to say simplistic, oppositions and accessible, comprehensible structures where there is a seeming t…

  • "The Homotext of Tournier's "Les Meteores

    Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•SubStance•1989

In Les Mitiores, Michel Tournier proposes a theorization of the inscription of desire in the world. Along with this theorization of desire, Tournier develops a theory of textuality that shows the fundamentally alien nature of fiction. These two theoretical perspectives are in fact aspects of one program: Tournier meditates on the indeterminacy of same and other and theorizes both sexual and textual difference. The two aspects of the theory can be…

    Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•1990

In a select number of his shorter works, including Author of Beltraffio, Figure in the Carpet, Death of the Lion, and The Aspern Papers, Henry James inquires into the epistemological status of writing.' Even if he always makes the assumption that the reflected phenomena of consciousness are writeable, he never assumes that the right language is always at hand. James explores the extent of the activity of writing and the functions and decisions in…

  • Renaud Camus's Roman Columns

    Lawrence R Schehr•ARTICLE•SubStance•1992

THE WORK TO DATE of the contemporary French author Renaud Camus, best known for the work Tricks, consists of about a dozen volumes that can be separated into three categories. First there is a series of semi-fictional prose, including Passages and Eglogues, literary by virtue of a complicated mise-en-texte of imbrications, framings, and high degrees of self-reflexivity and self-consciousness. The second group consists of a pair of historical nove…
