Arabic Grammar
Standard Arabic - the language of educated discourse throughout the Arab world - presents difficulties beyond those encountered in most foreign languages. Though today it is increasingly being popularised, it remains essentially an elitist, 'learned' language. It has been used without substantial change for over thirteen centuries, in regions as distant as Spain and China, in fields as diverse as poetry and medicine, mathematics and theology. Its…

Little Pharaoh
LITTLE PHARAOH A SHOR'T STORY BY MAHMUD TAIMUR Translator's Note to "Little Pharaoh" (Fir aun al-Sagh r) This story was published in 1939, and gave its title to a collection of 12 (some of them much better known), prefaced by an essay on "The sources which have inspired my writing". It exemplifies in an almost classical way many of Taimiir's most marked characteristics. Super- ficially, it could be read entirely as a piece of dreamy, romantic kit…

Communication from Mr. G. M. Wickens
Two articles of mine on the poetry of Ḥāfiẓ 1 were recently criticized severely, even violently, by Dr. N. E. M. Boyce in an article written in a kind of informal collaboration with Professor W. B. H. Henning. 2 Dr. Boyce was good enough to send me a page-proof copy of her article very shortly before publication, and I noted at the time how widely divergent were our respective views, both as regarded general approach and also in matters of detail…

The Persian Conception of Artistic Unity in Poetry and its Implications in Other Fields
This article takes as its point of departure the conclusions drawn in Professor Arberry's paper "Orient Pearls at Random Strung". It is hopefully intended both to add to those conclusions in their own sphere of poetical criticism and to suggest something of the relevance of the problem as a whole in the broad structure of Persian thought. (It seems scarcely necessary to add that the extent to which that will imply Islamic thought and Eastern thou…
An Analysis of Primary and Secondary Significations in the Third Ghazal of Ḥāfiẓ
In the course of a recently published article, I had occasion to demonstrate, rather briefly and using a comparatively simple poem, what seemed to me a distinct pattern of symbolic allusion in the verse of Ḥāfiẓ. I suggested that this type of pattern (especially in association with certain others, which have recently engaged the attention of scholars) largely invalidated the traditional view of Persian poetry as a random shower of brilliant, but …
