Profit, Profits, and Profit Motive
What are profits and how can they be justified? These questions are at the center of this article. In the first part, different positions and theories in the history of economic thought on the nature of profits are explored. The second part deals with the legitimacy of profits, specifically through the lens of Rawls's Theory of Justice and Robert Nozick's libertarian perspective. Of key importance from a business ethics perspective are questions …

An Aesthetic Theory of Conflict in Administrative Ethics
Normally, one would think of conflict in administrative ethics as something to be avoided or resolved. This article, however, explores the possibility that conflict in ethics is essential and productive. Great art is beautiful precisely because of tension, not in spite of it, and the authors argue that administrative ethics is more like art than science. Therefore, the authors adopt an aesthetic point of view that examines tension and balance and…
Publics” Administration and the Ethics of Particularity
Ethical orientations that emphasize universal duties, ideals, and values are well known to public administrators. We pay attention to principle, policy, ideals, shared goals, and the provision of a variety of commonly held values, such as clean air and water, mosquito abatement, and public recreation. The word “public” often seems to be a synonym for “universal.” However, this article explores particularity in ethics, especially as it applies to …
Do Public-Sector and Private-Sector Personnel Have Different Ethical Dispositions
With the use of an instrument consisting of responses to eight vignettes, the authors of this study sampled ninety-two employees of a southern city's administration and 141 employees of a midwest financial firm regarding their predispositions to prefer deontological or consequentialist formrs of ethical reasoning (or, more crudely, duties v. results). Contrary to theory, we found no difference between the public- and private-sector groups we stud…
Natural Law and Business Ethics
We describe the Catholic natural law tradition by examining its origins in the medieval penitentials, the papal decretals, the writings of Thomas Aquinas, and seventeenth century casuistry. Catholic natural law emerges as a flexible ethic that conceives of human nature as rational and as oriented to certain basic goods that ought to be pursued and whose pursuit is made possible by the virtues. We then identify four approaches to natural law that …
Administration Ethics and Judgments of Utility
Administrative ethics in the 20th century is marked in part by the adoption of classic utilitarian decision-making techniques that try to maximize good effect in the lives of the citizenry. However despite a plethora of widely used quantitative techniques spawned by utilitarianism, the practical foundations of this ethical theory have been called into question with various discoveries by organization theorists that in actuality the classic theory…

Ethical Theory for the Public Administrator
Philosophical Links to TA
The “Hegelian Model” of triadic logic is applied to the PAC triad to explain certain conceptual connections among the three basic ego states. Oftentimes, the Adult is regarded simply as a third alternative to Parent and Child. An argument is developed to support the logical primacy of the Integrated Adult ego state, which is considered to subsume the Parent and Child by integrating them into the full range of Adult behavior. This is in distinctio…
Philosophical Links to TA
Traditional TA theory describes the Adult ego state as being deliberate, calculating, and thoughtful, and emphasizes the notion of Reason. Other points of view consider the spontaneous, intimate, and aware aspects of the Integrated Adult, and emphasize the concept of freedom. These seemingly conflicting approaches may be reconciled by the moral philosophical principle of Immanuel Kant that Reason is a faculty which produces freedom from inclinati…
