Some remarks on the miniatures in the Society's Jāmi‘ al-tawārīkh
This copy (dated 714/1314), which is now on indefinite loan to the British Museum, is perhaps the best known of our illustrated manuscripts. It is one of the few surviving remnants of the vast historical project set in motion by the Ilkhānid wazīr Rashīd al-Dīn Faẓl Allāh (d. 718/1318), and in its present form consists of fragments of the second volume of the Jāmi‘ al-tawārīkh in the Arabic version, amounting to 60 folios, viz.:— (1) Fragments of…

The Turkish Verses of Qāsim Al-Anvār
In the preface to his edition of the Kulliyāt i Qāsim i Anvār (printed at Tehran, 1337/1958–9, p. 112) Professor Sa‘‛d Nafīsī alludes to the difficulty he has encountered in establishing the text of four of the poems (pp. 406–8) which the Persian poet wrote, playfully as it seems, either completely or partly in Turkish. Although the editor had ten manuscripts at his disposal, he has to admit himself (in a footnote on p. 406) that the Turkish of t…

Traces of a Lost Autobiographical Work by a Courtier of Selim II
Autobiography is a genre not frequently encountered in Ottoman literature. In recent years two works have been published which fall into this category-the autobiography of 'Omān Āghā who was a prisoner of war in Austria towards the close of the seventeenth century, and the memoirs of Ma'jūnjuzāde Muṣṭafa Efendi describing his experiences after his capture by the Knights of Malta in 1597
The Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts of the British Museum
Until the latter half of the nineteenth century no separate department of Oriental books or manuscripts existed in the British Museum. Such works as had been acquired in the foundation collections of the Museum, the Old Royal, Sloane, Harleian, and Cottonian Collections, and those acquired subsequently by donation and purchase, were comparatively few in number and were administered by the two departments of Printed Books and of Manuscripts. By 18…
Notes on an Old Ottoman Translation of the Kur'an
The Manuscript numbered OR 95I5 in the British Museum was acquired from a London dealer in I924. It consists of 250 folios, containing the text of Suras XIX-XXXV, copied in an elegant Suls, with interlinear Persian and Turkish translations in smaller Naskh hands; but it is unfortunately defective at the beginning and end. The manuscript measures 13 by 9, has fifteen lines to the page, and is written on a stiff, buffcoloured and glossy paper. Some…
